SYBASE STARTS COMMERCIAL SHIPMENTS OF SQL MONITOR

SQL Monitor is First Tool to Offer Mainframe-like Performance Monitoring
and Tuning For Client/Server Database Environments

EMERYVILLE, CA, October 5, 1993 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced general availability of SQL
Monitor, Release 10, the first software tool available for distributed
client/server database performance monitoring and tuning. With SQL
Monitor, companies now have mainframe-like control over the systems
performance of their SQL Server-based distributed database environments.
Shipping today, SQL Monitor is the second product in the System 10 family
to begin commercial production.

SQL Monitor is a comprehensive, easy-to-use graphical tool that helps
systems administrators isolate problems with local or remote SQL Server
systems, manage the servers, and fine-tune them for optimal performance.
It delivers significantly more accurate and detailed information than the
data provided by the general-purpose monitoring tools and operating system
utilities used in many client/server environments today.

"The growing shift from centralized, mainframe-based systems to distributed
database environments poses a significant challenge to the systems
administrators responsible for managing these databases," said Stu
Schuster, vice president of marketing for Sybase, Inc. "SQL Monitor, part
of Sybase's family of enterprise client/server-based Systems Management
tools, alleviates this burden by providing administrators with complete,
mainframe-like capabilities for monitoring today's dynamic, distributed
computing environments. Equally important, SQL Monitor allows information
systems (IS) departments to develop application programs yielding optimal
SQL Server performance."

SQL Monitor Features, Competitive Advantages

The SQL Monitor product consists of two components. SQL Monitor Server
accesses SQL Server shared memory as a background task to capture SQL
Server performance statistics. SQL Monitor Client connects to SQL Monitor
Server and displays performance data through a graphical user interface.
With SQL Monitor Client, a systems administrator can easily specify the
statistics to be monitored, the level of detail, frequency of updates, and
how data will be presented. The SQL Monitor components offer greater
accuracy and more detailed information than other general-purpose
monitoring tools and operating system utilities.

"The major issue is that other monitoring tools track general problem areas
but not specific database issues. As a result, systems administrators
often cannot locate database problems until they occur," said John
Mandile, vice president of systems management products for Sybase. "SQL
Monitor provides detailed data such as database locking status, cache
statistics, device I/O, memory allocation, network traffic and CPU
utilization. Several of our beta test customers report that this data has
allowed them to isolate recurring database problems and identify others
before they ever appear."

Another issue is that general-purpose monitoring tools query the server
directly for operational information. This significantly slows the
server's ability to handle transactions, making it difficult to gauge true
database performance. By contrast, the SQL Monitor tool accesses SQL
Server shared memory, greatly minimizing the impact on database
performance.

"Because SQL Monitor doesn't intrude on the server's performance, it
doesn't become part of the problem," agreed Ken Dulin, director of
database technologies for Everest Technologies, Inc., who currently uses
SQL Monitor to monitor six SQL Server databases.

Dulin has seen a number of benefits since switching from the database and
operating system utilities he previously used. "The utilities didn't
always give us the monitoring data we needed, so we would have to write
custom code," he recalled. "With SQL Monitor, we no longer have to
maintain this custom code. And SQL Monitor has allowed us to successfully
validate the physical implementation of our SQL Servers and identify
problem processes."

Availability and System Requirements

SQL Monitor 10 is shipping now. The SQL Monitor Server works with SQL
Server versions 4.9.1 or above, as well as SQL Server 10. The SQL Monitor
Client operates on UNIX systems running Motif version 1.2 and native
Microsoft Windows, versions 3.1 or above. Disk space requirements are 3MB
for Motif and 2MB for Windows. All components require a minimum of 4MB
available memory.

All pricing is based on the hardware configuration supported. SQL Monitor
Client starts at $595 for a single-user Microsoft Windows 3.1 license and
$1,880 for a single-user UNIX system license. SQL Monitor Server starts at
$2,580 for an unlimited-user UNIX system license.

System 10

The SQL Monitor product is another milestone in Sybase's delivery on the
promise of its System 10 family, which was created to meet the specific
needs of enterprise client/server computing. With today's announcement,
two of the eleven System 10 products are commercially available: SQL
Monitor and OmniSQL Gateway. Seven other products are in beta test,
including SQL Server 10, which is expected to begin general availability
within 30 days.
