SYBASE SHIPS SYSTEM 10 CORE PRODUCTS: SQL SERVER 10 AND BACKUP SERVER

Products' Unmatched Performance and Reliability Acknowledged by Beta Users
and Early Contract Wins

EMERYVILLE, CA, October 20,1993-- Sybase, Inc., the Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced general availability of the core
components of the company's System 10 enterprise client/server family of
products: Sybase's SQL Server 10 relational database management system
(RDBMS) and Backup Server 10 one of Sybase's family of control server
products. Beta users cited the products' high performance, standards
compliance and distributed control as industry differentiators.

"The primary concern of organizations migrating to, or expanding the use
of, client/server computing, is achieving the performance, security and
control of the mainframe in this new distributed environment," said Stu
Schuster, vice president of marketing at Sybase. "The latest version of
SQL Server, bundled with the new Backup Server, was created in connection
with our customer design partners to meet those needs. We are delighted to
continue to deliver on the promise of our System 10 products for
enterprise client/server computing."

Early contract wins for SQL Server 10 and Backup Server signify the scope
of the products' application for enterprise computing. Recent examples
include: selection as the client/server software core of the $149 million
Air Force contract (AFCAC 305) to transition the armed forces, DoD and IRS
from proprietary host-based to client/server computing architectures; and
selection as the official database supplier to the World Cup '94 Soccer
Championships to manage operations across nine U.S. cities and hundreds of
press centers around the globe.

SQL Server 10 and Backup Server

The SQL Server, a high performance relational database server product, is
designed to deliver scalable high performance on the most cost-effective
hardware, maintaining high transaction and query throughput while
supporting up to thousands of users. SQL Server is based on an advanced
multi-threaded virtual server database architecture, that uses only one
operating system process per CPU to support all clients on the system. Key
features of this architecture include: server-enforced integrity, high
application availability, and on-line distributed RDBMS capabilities. The
SQL Server product has been shipping since 1987, and is currently
installed at over 10,000 Sybase-supported customer sites worldwide.

The previous version to SQL Server 10 is SQL Server Release 4.9.
Applications written to previous versions of the SQL Server product are
fully compatible with the SQL Server 10 release and require no conversion
to run on the new server.

Backup Server software, which comes bundled with SQL Server 10, provides
high performance backup, loading and recovery for very large databases
--up to hundreds of gigabytes-- with control functions for both local and
remote backup. Because Backup Server offloads data backup from the server,
dumping has minimal impact on running applications and increases the
capacity of the server. Other benefits include round-the-clock control
tens to hundreds of gigabyte databases, lights-out operations, and
recovery for site outages and disaster recovery.

Combined, the SQL Server 10 and Backup Server Provide: Very Large Database
(VLDB) support and performance, extending Sybase's lead in the market;
multi-standard compliance for better enterprise-wide data integration; and
operational control for mainframe-like data security and reliability.

VLDB Support

- Supports large (100s of Gigabytes) multi-transactional
  OLTP systems;
- On-line database backups at speeds up to and exceeding
  10 gigabytes per hour with negligible impact on running
  applications;
- Double the speed of sort and index creation;
- The database consistency checker is three times faster;
- Bulk load is seven times faster.

Myke Miller, manager at Andersen Consulting, commented on SYBASE System 10
product performance. "We've developed a 50-plus Gigabyte Passenger Revenue
Accounting (PRA) System for use by major airlines that supports in excess
of 1,000 users. For this application, which has very tight batch schedules
and large volumes--about 400,000 transactions per day--SYBASE is the only
product that can meet our needs. With this application, which will go into
production in the next three months, we are basically replacing the
mainframe with the PRA application."

Standards Compliance

-100% compatible with ANSI/ISO Standard SQL-89: new cursor
 support, declarative referential integrity, new datatypes
 and extended transaction model;
-First RDBMS to be compliant with entry-level ANSI/ISO SQL-92;
-Compliant with the C2 level of trust as specified by the
 US National Computer Security Center's (NCSC) requirements;
-FIPS 127-1 compliant;
-Will support XA, the X/Open Consortium's predominant protocol
 standard for coordinating distributed heterogeneous
 transactions.

SQL Server 10 was chosen in June as the RDBMS software solution for the
$149 million AFCAC-305 (Air Force Computer Acquisition Center) lot 2
award. Beta customer and Federal systems integrator HFSI selected SYBASE
System 10 for its winning contract bid:

"SYBASE was selected as the software foundation for the HFSI team's
proposal based on its strong commitment to client/server technology," said
Sam Wilson, vice president of Air Force operations and C3I for HFSI. "The
SYBASE product line provides the performance, security and commitment to
standards-based open systems required in the federal market, which played
a significant role in enabling the HFSI team to secure the AFCAC 305
award."

Operational Control

-Configurable audit trail for greater security assurance,
 chargeback accounting, and an automated routine log dump.

SQL Server has also been selected by the World Cup Association as its
enterprise client/server system to support the 1993/94 soccer tournament,
where it will act as the core of a networked OLTP system for maintaining
and retrieving all tournament related data--from scores, standings and
players statistics to registration, area entertainment and reservations.
Therefore, operational control and reliability for this global network of
information is key to the World Cup and its systems integrators, EDS.

Pricing and Availability

SQL Server 10, bundled with Backup Server is available now at prices
ranging from $1995 to $256,160 depending on hardware platform and number
of users supported. It is available to current customers on maintenance
contract at no charge. The products are currently available on eight
platforms: HP 9000, IBM RS/6000, NCR System 3000, Sun 4/SunOS, Sun 4/
Solaris, DEC OSF/1 AXP, and DEC OpenVMS and OpenVMSVax.

Within 90 days, Sybase expects to begin commercial shipments on an
additional thirteen platforms: Data General AViiON, ICL, Motorola, NEC,
Novell NetWare, Pyramid S Series, Sequent, Silicon Graphics, Stratus FTX,
Stratus VOS, Unisys U6000, Bull (DPXbased), and SCO Unix.

The SQL Server 10 release is scheduled for general availability on
Microsoft Windows NT and IBM OS/2 in the first half of 1994.

SYBASE System 10

The SQL Server 10 database and Backup Server software are part of the
System 10 product family which was created specifically to meet the needs
of enterprise-wide, client/server computing.

With today's announcements, including two separate releases on general
availability of Open Client, Open Server, Embedded SQL and SA Companion,
eight of the 11 SYBASE System 10 products are now generally available.
Replication Server, which has been in beta since June, is expected to be
generally available in the next 30 days. Alpha availability of Navigation
Server and Configurator is planned by the end of the year.
