NEW VCR PLUS+ PRODUCT REVOLUTIONIZES TV TAPING WITH A TELEPHONE CALL

The VCR Plus+ With CallSet Uses Telephone For Initial Setup, Making The
World's Easiest Taping System Even Easier

PASADENA, Calif., October 18, 1993 -- Gemstar Development Corporation,
inventor of the VCR Plus+ Instant Programm', which revolutionized the way
TV programs are taped worldwide, has introduced the next milestone in VCR
taping, the VCR Plus+ with CallSet'. The VCR Plus+ with CallSet allows
consumers to accomplish the initial, onetime product setup in a few
seconds over the telephone -- a first for the video industry. The frazzled
nerves associated with setting up new electronic devices are now
officially an experience of the past with the VCR Plus+ with CallSet -- a
product that is truly user-friendly in every sense of the word.

The initial setup of the VCR Plus+ with CallSet is accomplished with one
free telephone call. Instead of using an instruction manual for setting up
the product, consumers simply dial a toll-free Gemstar phone number and
identify their zip code, cable system, VCR brand/model and cable box. A
special tone is then transmitted over the telephone to the VCR Plus+ unit,
setting it for the correct VCR model, cable box model, the entire cable
channel line-up and even the correct date and time -- all within seconds.
The product is then ready to use instantly. Consumers subsequently punch
in the PlusCode numbers from newspapers and TV Guide to program favorite
shows for taping.

The VCR Plus+ with CallSet, styled in a new streamlined and compact case,
is being offered for a suggested retail price of $59.95.

"The fastest and easiest way to tape TV shows just got even faster and
easier with the introduction of the VCR Plus+ with CallSet," said Dr.
Henry Yuen, Gemstar Development Corporation chief executive officer. "The
VCR Plus+ with CallSet reflects Gemstar's continued focus on developing
products that simplify life for the consumer."

New features of the VCR Plus+ with CallSet include the "now" button. Using
this button, consumers can record programs already in-progress in one
simple motion for fast and easy taping.

Like the original VCR Plus+ Instant Programmer, the VCR Plus+ with CallSet
offers the convenience of Cable Box Control. Cable Box Control allows
consumers to tape several programs broadcast on different channels without
having to manually change channels on the cable box. As a result, cable
box owners no longer have to remain at home to change cable box channels
when they are taping.

The VCR Plus+ with CallSet also includes other useful features first
introduced in the original VCR Plus+ Instant Programmer. These include:
three recording options -once, weekly or daily; display indicators for the
amount of tape required to record for the next 24 hours; and memory
storage for future taping of up to 14 programs.

VCR Plus+ products record television programs with PlusCode numbers
published and broadcast by media with a worldwide audience of 180 million
consumers. In the U.S., more than 600 newspapers and all editions of TV
Guide publish the PlusCode numbers next to individual TV programs in TV
listings.

Gemstar Development Corporation pioneered instant, error-free taping
technology and has set the standard for VCR recording worldwide. The VCR
Plus+ system has now been adopted by all of the world's major VCR
manufacturers.

The Gemstar group of companies is privately held and was formed to develop
and market technological products which simplify life for the consumer.
The U.S. company, Gemstar Development Corporation, is headquartered at 135
North Los Robles Avenue, Suite 870, Pasadena, Calif., 91101.
