Aldus awards grants to three Additions developers

SEATTLE, October 19, 1993--Aldus Corporation today announced that it will
award three Additions software developers more than $100,000 in grants to
help fund the design, implementation, and marketing of Additions for Aldus
PageMaker. The grant awards will average from $30,000 to $50,000.

Integrated Software, Zephyr Design, and Group Logic Inc. will receive the
grants based upon the specific benefit that their Addition will bring to
Aldus PageMaker customers. A proven record in developing add-on products
and a keen understanding of customer requirements in the advertising and
workgroup publishing markets, especially magazine and newspaper
publishing, rated highly in the selection process.

One half of the award will be advanced to each recipient. The balance will
follow when the developer completes the Addition.

"The grant program will provide incentive for further Additions
development," said Karen Howe, Aldus senior product marketing manager. "We
hope that the program will stimulate the creation of third-party Additions
that would have taken too long to develop or would not have been developed
at all. The grants let developers explore their ideas with little risk
while pursuing their mainstream businesses."

Integrated Software (New York, New York) will develop an Addition solution
tentatively called "AdMaker." This will be used by magazines, periodicals
and newspapers to facilitate publishing of paginated documents that
include advertisements. Aldus noted Integrated Software's track record and
understanding of the systems integration needs of customers as the primary
reasons for the award.

"The Additions grant program gives us a fantastic opportunity to explore a
whole new kind of software," noted Shah Karim, managing director for
Integrated Software. "The solution we are putting together will meet the
needs of magazine advertising production, and that will save PageMaker
users a lot of time and money."

Zephyr Design (Seattle, Washington) will develop an Addition to assist
advertising teams in sharing each other's layout and design art. Zephyr is
known for excellent research, knowledge of customer requirements and the
consistent creation of high-quality Additions.

"This grant is giving us a wonderful opportunity to move into the area of
group publishing solutions for the advertising industry," said Beverly
Multerer, co-owner and creative director for Zephyr Design.

Group Logic Inc. (Arlington, Virginia), formerly Group Technologies, will
write an Addition to allow PageMaker users to easily export images of
PageMaker publications as proofs. Group Logic demonstrated a good
reputation for developing and shipping high quality products for the
high-end publishing market.

"The grant program will make it possible for us to create an Addition that
tightly integrates our products with PageMaker," said Andy Lewis, director
of new product marketing at Group Logic. "The end result will be a much
better solution for Aldus and Group Logic customers than would otherwise
have been possible."

The Aldus grant program was started in April and invited developers
worldwide to apply. Once selected, recipients may choose to market and
sell the Addition through their own distribution channels or use the Aldus
Developers Cooperative for this role. The Aldus Developer Relations group
oversees the grant program and coordinates directly with the developers on
the Additions design and implementation.

The grant is not a loan or an advance against royalties. The developer owns
the code and controls the product.

"We are really committed to our developers' success," said Lisa Wise, Aldus
manager of Developer Relations. "Independently developed Additions allow
users to tailor PageMaker to their specific needs rather than having to
work with a shrink-wrapped product that doesn't match their requirements
100 percent."

The Additions technology provides a specialized language of commands and
queries that enables developers to tailor PageMaker for special publishing
needs. Developers can write complex code modules and then communicate with
PageMaker via commands that can perform any action that can be done to a
publication. Queries can collect specific data from a PageMaker
publication. With few exceptions, the language is identical for both
Windows and Macintosh, making most Additions easily adaptable to both
platforms.

Three kinds of Additions exist: loadable modules, which become an integral
part of PageMaker's interface; standalone modules, for running PageMaker
from another application; and scripts, which enable users to automate
PageMaker functions.

The grants apply to loadable and stand-alone modules.
