Multi-Tech Announces "Talk AnyTime", V.32terbo, and Software Enhancements
to Voice/Data/Fax Modem

MOUNDS VIEW, MINNESOTA--November 15, 1993--Multi-Tech Systems Inc., a
leading data communications technology company, announced that it is
enhancing its MultiModemPCS (Model MT1932PCS) with V.32terbo technology,
"Talk Anytime " feature, and enhanced MultiExpressPCS Windows. The new
MT1932PCS supports the AT&T open standard called V32terbo. It operates at
16.8K and 19.2K bps by extending current 9.6K and 14.4K bps modem
technology, adding two new data rates in a scheme otherwise like that of
the 14.4K bps V32bis. The higher speed V.32terbo technology enhances the
performance of simultaneous voice and data communications by providing up
to 33% more throughput. The Talk AnyTime feature activates voice-over-data
communications AnyTime the handset is picked up. The V.32terbo
MultiModemPCS with Talk AnyTime will start shipping in January 1994 and is
priced at $949 (U.S.).

According to Multi-Tech President Raghu Sharma, "Many voice over data
applications need the extra throughput afforded by the V.32terbo
technology. This is particularly the case when there is substantial data
traffic while a voice conversation is in progress. Also, the convenience
of being able to change from voice over data to pure data transfer by
simply hanging up the phone, means you can send an intense amount of data
during a session and then resume voice conversations by picking up the
phone again. This is useful in sending a medical image during a
consultation for instance. Since the Talk AnyTime feature is strictly a
hardware feature, you can use any communications software without
reprogramming, changing setup strings, or reconfiguring the modem. You
also don't have to worry about changes in operator procedures or training.
Now, getting voice over data is as simple as picking up a phone. The
MultiExpressPCS software enhancements include the ability to export .WAV
file. That means you can send voice messages from a MultiModemPCS to any
PC sound system supporting .WAV and have it played."

Using the patent pending Talk Anytime, users can switch to simultaneous
voice over data mode between two MultiModemPCSs without having to
configure the modems first. Once the data link has been established
between two MT1932PCSs, a voice over data link is started by lifting
handset from the handset cradle. This will cause the first modem off hook
to "ring" the other modem (the user can hear the remote modem ringing
through the handset just like a normal phone.) When the answering modem
receives the "ring," it flashes its LEDs and rings every two seconds to
get the remote user's attention. When the remote user answers the call
(picks up the handset), a normal phone conversation can take place while
still passing data through the modems. To end the voice over data link,
the users simply put the handsets back into their cradles. If one user
fails to hang up, a "howler" tone reminds the user that the voice
conversation is terminated and the handset should be placed in the
cradle.

The MT1932PCS provides V.42 error correction in asynchronous mode for 100%
error-free data and V.42bis "4-to-1" data compression for effective
throughputs up to 76.8K bps (depending on file content). For async
operation over dial-up lines, the MT1932PCS includes a V.17/Group 3 fax
modem (for 14.4K/ 9600/4800 bps fax transmissions), MultiExpressPCS data
communications software (for desktop management), and MultiExpressFax
software.

Multi-Tech Systems, which reported sales of $81 million for 1992, was
