Multi-Tech Announces Asynchronous Statistical Multiplexers

MOUNDS VIEW, MINNESOTA--November 15, 1993--Mulff-Tech Systems, Inc., a
leading manufacturer of data communications equipment, announced a new
MultiMux Statistical Multiplexer that can communicate asynchronously over
phone lines. By communicating asynchronously (in addition to the more
traditional synchronous mode), the new MMH900 series muxes can take
advantage of high speed modems with CCITT V.42bis compression to increase
throughput and can incorporate voice over data communications using
Munti-Tech's MultiModemPCS voice/data/fax modems. The MMH900 series also
includes up to eight asynchronous data channels (operating up to 38.4K
bps), optional internal 9600 and 14.4K bps modems, internal multi-rate DSU
(2400, 4800, 9600, 19.2K and 56K bps DDS operation), and a built-in
command modem for easy network management. The new asynchronous MultiMuxes
are shipping immediately and are priced at $1299 (U.S.) for a four channel
MMH904C and $1599 (U.S.) for an eight channel MMH908 without internal DSUs
or modems. The internal Multi-rate DSU costs $750, internal 9600 bps
4-wire link modem $950 (U.S.) and 14.4K internal 4-wire link modem $1400
(U.S.).

"The addition of an asynchronous MultiMux answers two important
requirements for the mux sites that needs up to eight input channels,"
states Raghu Sharma, President of Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. "First of all,
there is better performance. By adding an asynchronous composite link, the
MMH900 series MultiMuxes provide higher throughput over conventional phone
lines. Recent modem technology advancements, like the V.32terbo modems
using V.42bis compression can reach asynchronous speeds up to 76.8K bps.
By using our new MultiMux with such modems, users can see dramatic
improvement in channel performance. Secondly, the asynchronous link lets
users incorporate voice communications on the same phone line using our
MultiModemPCS. Using the MultiModemPCS's Talk Anytime feature, a user at
one mux site can talk to a user at a second site by simply picking up the
handset."

The new MMH900 series MultiMux statistical multiplexers come in four and
eight channel models. The composite link is equipped with an RS232
interface (V.35 jumper option) that can operate with DSUs/ CSUs up to 64K
bps, fractional T1 up to 64K bps, and 2-or 4-wire, dial or leased,
synchronous or asynchronous modems. There are two internal synchronous
modem options available that operate over 4-wire leased lines (9600 and
14.4K bps), and an internal multi-rate DSU (2400, 4800, 9600, 19.2K or 56K
bps) that is designed to operate over AT&T's DATAPHONE Digital Service
(DDS) or equivalent digital data services. The muxes feature channel
speeds up to 38.4K bps, asynchronous data input, hardware and software
flow control, EIA pass-through, downline parameter loading, channel
pacing, operational statistics, channel statistics, full system
diagnostics, and a built-in 2400 bps command modem for remote parameter
updating and technical support.

Multi-Tech Systems, which reported sales of $81 million for 1992, was
founded in 1970 to manufacture data communications equipment and systems
for the global market of networking product users. The Minnesota-based
company is well-known for its MultiModem line of dial-up communications
products. Multi-Tech's family of products include a complete line of
data/fax modems, MultiMux statistical multiplexers, DSUs, 3270/3780/5250
emulation systems, X.25 PADS/Switches, UNIX serial interfaces,
communications software, LAN/WAN connectivity products, and most recently,
the MultiModemPCS, a voice/data/fax personal communications system. These
products are sold in over 70 countries through a worldwide network of
