Beame & Whiteside Introduces New Server Software to Link NetWare to UNIX
and Windows NT

New Connectivity Solution Gives NetWare Users Seamless Access to Solaris
and Windows NT Files and Print Services

November 16, 1993 -- LAS VEGAS, Nevada - At COMDEX 93 Fail being held here
this week, Beame & Whiteside Software will demonstrate its new
MultiConnect IPX software for Sun Solaris and Microsoft Windows NT.
MultiConnect IPX was developed to be loaded on Windows NT servers or
Solaris hosts to provide seamless file and print sharing between Novell
NetWare workstations and either Solaris or Windows NT computers. The
software should be ready to ship in January 1994.

The current line of MultiConnect IPX products includes MuitiConnect Server
for Windows NT, MultiConnect Server for Solaris, and MultiConnect Client
for Solaris. Each software product has its own NetWare SPX/IPX protocol
stack which can be loaded on either a Solaris UNIX or Windows NT host. No
additional connectivity software is required for NetWare workstations or
servers. The MultiConnect IPX protocol stack is implemented as loadable
drivers and provides connectivity at the kernel level, creating a
high-performance connection to support file sharing between NetWare
networks and Solaris UNIX and Windows NT systems, as well as
multi-directional print services. So, for environments that need to
interconnect NetWare, UNIX, and Windows NT resources, there is now one
piece of server software that can be loaded on the Solaris or NT host;
it's no longer necessary to license multiple NFS clients to support
NetWare workstations, nor is it necessary to have a NetWare server in
order to take advantage of NetWare services.

"Novell's NetWare has gained international acceptance as a local area
network platform, and this new line of SPX/IPX support software opens up
new alternatives for NetWare users who need to share network resources
with UNIX and Windows NT users," said Carl Beame, Chairman and Chief
Technologist of Beame & Whiteside. "I'm happy to say that we are the first
software developer to add SPX/IPX support to UNIX, and we expect an
enthusiastic response from NetWare, UNIX, and Windows NT users. These
products offer an ideal solution for customers who need to integrate their
installed NetWare systems with UNIX and Windows NT platforms. And
customers can still add our TCP/IP and NFS software to bring NetWare
clients into larger, multi-platform network environments."

The MultiConnect IPX product family currently includes MultiConnect Server
for Windows NT and MultiConnect Server for Solaris. MuitiConnect Server Is
a NetWare server emulation that provides NetWare 3.11 features and
transparent file and printer access to NetWare client workstations. The
Solaris implementation uses a TPI interface that is loaded into the kernel
and the Windows NT implementation uses an IPX driver that works with the
NDIS drivers to access the network. Both server products support Ethernet
II and Ethernet 802.3 frame structures (and SNAP frames for Windows NT).
The IPX stack also supports SAP advertising services, RIP for connecting
to other NetWare networks, a socket programming interface library, and a
NetWare API subset programming library.

Both high-performance server emulations offer full file services, support
multiple simultaneous users, and have full bindery and queue management
services. They also support multi-directional printing so NetWare clients
can direct print output to either Windows NT or Solaris-supported print
devices, or to other NetWare print servers on the network. Unlike other
solutions, the MultiConnect IPX file server can also operate when no
native NetWare services are present (e.g., in the event of a server
failure), providing independently developed MS-DOS utilities such as
LOGIN, LOGOUT, SUST, MAP, ATTACH, and DETACH, which are similar to their
NetWare counterparts.

MultiConnect Server for Windows NT and MultiConnect Server for Solaris both
feature the MultiConnect Virtual Terminal Server, which provides NetWare
NVT protocol services. Using the terminal emulator, NetWare users can log
on to Windows NT systems using an NT command window, or onto a Solaris
system using a UNIX prompt, Just as though their PCs were native
terminals.

Beame & Whiteside also plans to offer MultiConnect Client for Solaris, a
network client software package that allows Solaris users to mount NetWare
directories as H they were UNIX files. Using a mechanism similar to UNIX's
automount, Solaris users can access NetWare files as though they were
native UNIX files. One mounted, the NetWare volume functions just like a
UNIX directory, offering auto mounting by reference, UNIX file permission
mapping, UNIX uid/gid mapping, and client printing. Using MultiConnect
Client, Solaris users can also redirect print output to NetWare print
servers using the Ip interface (or using nprint, which is similar to the
Novell/MS-DOS print utility).

MultiConnect Server for Windows NT, MultiConnect Server for Solaris, and
MultiConnect Client for Solaris are expected to ship in the first quarter
of 1994.
