NCD INTRODUCES NEW GENERATION OF ENTRY-LEVEL COLOR X TERMINALS

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Nov. 29, 1993 -- Network Computing Devices, Inc.
(NCD), has replaced the entry-level models in its color X terminal line
with a new product family that offers greater performance and more
features yet costs up to 40 percent less.

The new Entry Color X Terminal (ECX) series includes the NCD 14-inch ECX14,
priced at $1,795; the 15-inch ECX15, priced at $1,995; and the 17-inch
ECX17, priced at $2,595. All three systems offer resolution of 1024 x 768
pixels and performance of 52,000 Xstones.

In addition, the ECX base electronics, available separately for $1,595, can
be used with any standard VGA/SVGA VEAS-conformant multisync monitor of
the user's choice.

The ECX products replace two earlier models: the NCD17c, a $4,295 17-inch
unit shipping since 1990; and the NCD14c, a $2,495 14-inch unit shipping
since 1991. These earlier models offered the same screen resolution as the
ECX line, with performance of approximately 35,000 Xstones.

"The new ECX price points will appeal to customers who were considering
lower-end PCs but don't want the administrative overhead, and to those
seeking a higher-performance alternative to ASCII or 3270 terminals
without a serious cost penalty," said NCD President Judy Estrin.

The newly designed ECX line incorporates several features not found in the
earlier NCD entry-level models. A PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card
International Assn.) slot on the back of an ECX unit, accessible without
opening the system chassis, can accommodate any PCMCIA-compatible I/O
function (e.g., token ring interface or modem). An integral local file
system supports up to 20 megabytes of PCMCIA-compatible Flash memory for
storing system software, fonts or configuration data.

In addition, a high-speed Centronics-compatible parallel port on the ECX
offers an alternative way to connect printers or scanners while leaving
the terminal's auxiliary serial port free for communication over XRemote,
NCD's high-speed protocol for remotely-connected X terminals.

ECX units offer the same ergonomic features as NCD's midrange MCX line,
with compact 12-inch-square base, keyboard shelf and security loop. The
base, compliant with the EPA Energy Star program, draws less than 30 watts
of power.

ECX monitors offer 70-Hz non-interlaced refresh rates for sharp,
flicker-free images, and comply with the European Community MPR-2
specification for low magnetic field emission.

Compatible with NCD's full line of X terminals and PC-Xware software, ECX
models run NCDware, the company's optimized version of the X11 server
software. NCDware supports xdmcp (the X display manager control protocol);
multiple local Telnet or LAT clients; local VT320 sessions; and SNMP-based
network management. Users can select NCD's OSF/MOTIF-compatible local
window manager, NCDwm (which also supports OPENLOOK features), or
host-based window management (e.g., OSF/MOTIF or OPENLOOK). Communication
protocols supported are TCP/IP, SLIP, XRemote, and Digital's DECnet and
LAT. Remote configuration capabilities allow NCD products to be completely
configured and managed from a central location.
The ECX family is the first NCD product line equipped with new boot PROMs
that support a graphical user interface to select monitor, network and
boot option parameters. In addition to previously available TFTP and MOP
booting, NFS booting is supported for the first time.

ECX products are available 30 days after receipt of order. Complete systems
include 4 megabytes of DRAM (expandable to 36 MB using a standard 32-bit
SIMM), serial port, parallel port, Ethernet or twisted-pair interface,
mouse, and keyboard choice of PS/2, UNIX, DEC LK401-compatible,
Sun-compatible or Japanese Kana style. Software license is $50 per unit.

Network Computing Devices, Inc., formed in February 1988, supplies X Window
System products which provide simultaneous access to networked
multi-vendor computers via workstation-style graphical user interfaces.
NCD is the leading worldwide supplier of X terminals, with a broad family
of color and monochrome X terminals in various screen sizes and
performance levels. The company's PC-X Division makes X server software
products for DOS and Microsoft Windows-based PCs, which integrate PCs into
X Window System environments.
