The Starlight Foundation, Toys 'R' Us and Nintendo of America officially
delivered Nintendo Fun Centers to the St. Vincent's pediatric ward in New
York City on September 30th. Fun Centers bring together a SNES, video game
library, VCR monitor, and a TV set in a free-standing unit that can come
directly to children in their beds. According to Phil Rogers, Nintendo's
vice president, operations, "Many health care professionals tell us that
video games play an important role in the overall patient care program by
distracting kids from the pain, fear, and loneliness that they often
experience in the hospital."

In January of 1993, as Nintendo was entering the second year of its program
to bring Fun Centers to hospitals around the country, the company asked
its retailers if they wanted to get involved and the response was
overwhelming, according to Nintendo. Toys 'R' Us was the first to come on
board and the store has committed to placing 60 units this fall. Other
major retailers who have committed to donations include Electronic
Boutique, Macy's West, Sears Roebuck and Co., and Software Etc. Several
licensees have also joined the effort including Hi-Tech Expressions,
Software Toolworks and FCI.

Richard Goddu, executive vice president, Toys 'R' Us, who was at the press
conference, explained that the retailer is happy to expand its own efforts
to place playrooms in hospitals and that this is "a small way for us to
give something back to the children."

Nintendo explains that this kind of cooperation between retailer,
manufacturer, and non-profit organization makes it easier to bring the Fun
Centers to more hospitals, and although currently most centers have been
placed in large cities, Nintendo hopes to bring the program into more
regional areas.
