Multi-Tech's New V.Fast MultiModemII Goes to Beta

MOUNDS VIEW, MINNESOTA--November 15, 1993--Multi-Tech Systems, Inc., a
leading data communications technology company, announced the introduction
of its newest MultiModemII, the MT2834BLV, for compatibility with the
prevalent V.32 and V.32bis datacomm standards, plus added support for the
V.Fast proposal. With the V.Fast enhancements, the MT2834BLV negotiates
data rates up to 28.8K bps when communicating with other V.Fast modems,
and with V.42 error correction and V.42bis data compression active, the
MT2834BLV delivers effective throughputs up to 115.2K bps (depending on
file content). In addition to compatibility with lower-speed modems based
on V32bis, V.32, V.22bis and other common modulation standards, the
MT2834BLV provides fax capability at 9600 and 14.4K bps. It also provides
basic voice and voice-over-data communications and includes a handset and
"off-hook" sensor. The MT2834BLV will be available in January, 1994, with
an estimated retail price of $799.

Multi-Tech's President, Raghu Sharma, states, "Although the V.Fast
approvals are moving slowly, the demand for the high speeds this standard
could provide is increasing. As our customers look to us for high quality
and performance, we are now responding with this new modem, which embraces
the consensus of the 28.8K bps V.Fast proposal. We are committed to any
modifications necessary, with free downloadable upgrades, to maintain
worldwide compatibility once the V.Fast proposal is ratified as the V.34
standard, as expected. The needs for voice communications and
voice-over-data communications are also answered in the MT2834BLV. Using
Multi-Tech's own Talk Anytime feature, a pair of MT2834BLVs adds voice
communication to virtually any asynchronous data stream, anytime the users
pick up the handsets. Perhaps the best feature of the MT2834BLV is the
promise of free downloadable upgrades from Multi-Tech's BBS, via FLASH
PROM technology, as the V.34 standard is ratified. Other vendors may
require the user to change PROMs and pay for the upgrade. "

The MT2834BLV provides synchronous or asynchronous operation over dedicated
or dial-up phone lines, with V.42 error correction in asynchronous mode
for 100% error-free data and V.42bis "4-to-1" data compression for
effective throughputs up to 115.2K bps (depending on file content). For
async operation over dial-up lines, it includes V.17/Group 3 fax
capability (for 14.4K/9600/4800 bps fax transmissions), MultiExpress data
communications software (for dial-in and dial-out), and MultiExpressFax
software (based on the de facto standard Class 2 fax modem commands). It
also includes all of the features and speeds of the other MultiModemII
products with the added feature of 4-wire leased-line operation.

The MT2834BLV's dial back-up feature gives users added reliability over a
leased-line connection. If the primary (leased line) link fails, the
MT2834BLV automatically uses a dial-up line to establish a back-up
connection. The dial-up link is used until the primary link can be
reestablished, at which time the session is returned to the leased-line
connection. All of this activity is transparent to the user. The MT2834BLV
also includes Multi-Tech's popular adaptive protocol enhancing, a UUCP
spoofing feature which speeds up typical UUCP batch file transfers in a
UNIX environment, and support for IBM's AS/400 environment. The MT2834BLV
uses industry-standard "AT" commands for modem configuration and dialing,
supports V.25bis for synchronous dialing applications and has a built-in
dialing directory for storing up to 10 phone numbers. Three RJ11 modular
phone jacks are on the back panel for connecting the leased line, dial-up
line, and a telephone handset, which is included with the modem. An RS232
serial port allows connection to a sync or async device, and a complete
set of LEDs provides easy visual monitoring of the modem's operation. A
special Error (ERR) LED lights up when the leased line is disconnected and
the MT2834BLV has gone to dial back-up (the back-up phone number, or
numbers, must be pre-stored in the modem's non-volatile memory).

Multi-Tech Systems, which reported sales of $81 million for 1992, was
founded in 1970 to manufacture data communications equipment and systems
for the global market of networking product users. The Minnesota-based
company is well-known for its MultiModem line of dial-up communications
products. Multi-Tech's family of products include a complete line of
data/fax modems, MultiMux statistical multiplexers, DSUs, 3270/3780/5250
emulation systems, X.25 PADS/Switches, UNIX serial interfaces,
communications software, LAN/WAN connectivity products, and most recently,
the MultiModemPCS, a voice/data/fax personal communications system. These
products are sold in over 70 countries through a worldwide network of
