O'Reilly & Associates and the IUCN/Species Survival Commission to Fund Plan
to Protect Crowned Pigeons

November 12, 1993 -- SEBASTOPOL, CA--O'Reilly & Associates, the leading
publisher of books for the Internet, UNIX, and The X Window System, whose
distinctive covers often feature wildlife, announced today that it is
donating funds and establishing a funding program for the Species Survival
Commission's field study of two species of crowned pigeons. The complete
field project costs $70,000 and lasts 8 months. O'Reilly is donating
$15,000 to kick off the funding, and starting a publicity campaign to help
raise the rest of the money--as well as awareness of the Commission and
its activities.

"The animals pictured on our Nutshell Handbook covers, business cards, ads,
and stationary have become a part of our identity as a company," said
publisher and president Tim O'Reilly. "Some of these animals are
endangered species, including the slender lorises pictured on our book sed
and awk, the tarsier pictured on Learning vi, and the Victoria crowned
pigeons pictured on Lex and Yacc.

"Our use of these animals' images demonstrates that even seeming
intangibles have real economic value. It seems only fair to pay the
animals something for the use of their likeness to sell our products, much
as soft drink manufacturers might pay a movie, sports or rock star to help
promote their products."

"O'Reilly & Associates has taken a creative and progressive approach to
supporting conservation," said Species Survival Commission Chairman George
B. Rabb. "Celebrities regularly receive compensation for endorsing
projects. I'm delighted that the concept has been extended to crowned
pigeons and perhaps other wild species in the future."

One of the Species Survival Commission's projects needing funding is a
field study of two species of crowned pigeons, including the Victoria
crowned pigeon used on the cover of O'Reilly's Lex and Yacc, a guide to
two important UNIX programming tools.

These chicken-sized birds live in New Guinea and Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The
project being funded by O'Reilly will be carried out by the SSC's Trade
Specialist Group. It is believed that all three species of crowned pigeon
are subject to exploitation due to hunting for food, sport and plumes, and
capture for wild bird parks throughout Asia. To support the Convention on
International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES),
the international treaty pertaining to trade of wild species, the SSC is
studying a number of species believed to be exploited at levels
detrimental to their survival. This study will examine distribution,
status and exploitation of crowned pigeons in Irian Jaya, Indonesia,
establish a methodology that can be used to assess their status in the
future, and recommend actions for their conservation.

FUNDING PROGRAM PLAN

In addition to donating $15,000, O'Reilly has organized a funding program
whereby its customers can receive a premium for donating to the Species
Survival Commission. (Due to the high cost of foreign shipping, at present
these premiums are available only for U.S. residents.)

--For donations of $50 or more, O'Reilly will give a special SSC/Lex and
Yacc teeshirt, which is only available for people making donations to this
project. Donors should be sure to include their address to receive this
one-size-fits-all tee-shirt.

--For donations of $100 or more, O'Reilly will give a free copy of any book
from its catalog--a value worth up to $60. Donors should specify which
book or books they want and include their street address and phone
number.

--For donations of $1000 or more, O'Reilly will give a free copy of any ten
books we publish--a value worth more than $250.

Donations should be made directly to SSC, and should mention the O'Reilly
offer. Checks should be made out to IUCN-US, and sent to:

Susan Tressler
Species Survival Commission, IUCN
c/o Chicago Zoological Society
Brookfield, IL 60513 USA

One hundred percent of the donation goes to fund the SSC project. O'Reilly
does not get any money from SSC to cover the books or shirts.
