Complete PCMCIA Interface System

November 1, 1993 -- Greer, SC . . . Computer Dynamics announces the
introduction of the PCMCDI, a complete PCMCIA interface system which opens
the rapidly expanding world of credit card memory and I/O to the PC bus
user. The PCMCIA expansion standard is finding many applications in
portable computers, consumer electronics, medical instrumentation, and
industry. The PCMCDI consists of a half-size PC bus interface module, a
one or two-slot drive, and cable. As a distinct unit, the drive can be
separated from the PC bus backplane electronics by up to 18", which may
have advantages in certain OEM applications. The system provides complete
Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) v2.0/
JEIDA v4.1 memory and l/O card support.

The 6.5" x 3.5" interface module, suitable for use in any ISA bus passive
backplane, gives the PC bus access to the PCMCIA card. It also provides
BIOS support for "AUTOBOOT" memory cards, which allow you to boot DOS from
a credit card. The onboard scratch pad RAM, required for "AUTOBOOT," is
also used to free system memory from BIOS support.

The drive provides one or two PCMCIA-compatible sockets (Types I, II or
III) and a "Busy" indicator to show when cards are in use. Type I PCMCIA
cards currently provide up to eight megabytes of battery-backed SRAM, One
Time Programmable (OTP) ROM, and Flash ROM. Type ll cards provide network
interface, FAX MODEM, and other communications functions. Type III cards
provide winchester disk storage. Since it is mechanically the same as a
3.5 inch floppy drive, the PCMCDI drive can be mounted wherever similar
size floppies would be placed.

As for other features, the PCMCDI's power and card control signals operate
as "quiet card bus" to reduce active power consumption when the cards are
not in use. Cards can be inserted or removed without cycling system power
or re-booting the system. DMA support is PC/AT compatible in byte mode.
Interrupt steering logic allows I/O card interrupts to be routed to PC
interrupts 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, or 14. PCMCIA card memory windows can appear
anywhere in the processor's 16M address space, and may range in size from
16k to 16M. This is required for execute-in-place where programs are
executed from card memory rather than being loaded into system RAM.

The complete PCMCDI is $290 in OEM quantities for the two-drive system.
Availability is stock to 30 days. SRAM, Flash ROM, Ethernet, Token Ring
and FAX/MODEM cards are also offered. For more information, contact the
