DIGITAL IMAGING MEETS SILVER HALIDE QUALITY
Kodak Announces Prints from Slides Machine

LONDON, ENGLAND, Nov. 11--Eastman Kodak Company today announced the Kodak
digital PFX system, a print from slides machine that should result in a
new level of image quality and cost savings for photofinishers.

The PFX system allows photofinishers to scan and digitize slides at high
resolution. It creates a color negative image electronically that is then
printed on high-quality color negative paper.

"Using traditional methods users would have to print onto color reversal
paper which can be costly. Or, users would have to create an internegative
which is an extra step in the process," said Cortlandt E. Johnson,
Business Planner, Photofinishing Equipment, Kodak Consumer Imaging. " With
the digital PFX system, we're offering photofinishers an easier, less
expensive process that produces images with the same quality as an optical
print."

PFX signifies "Prints from X"--with "X" meaning many types of images. Today
the system can make prints from slides but in the future this means
additional digital printing opportunities.

The PFX system consists of a slide scanner, a computer workstation, and the
Kodak CRT digital color printer.

The CRT printer (a high-speed cathode ray tube) exposes Photo CD index
prints or other digital image files onto color negative paper. These
prints can be processed off-line with the same equipment used to process
prints from negatives.

The scanner, like the printer, was developed for use with the Kodak Photo
CD system. It scans and digitizes information at 1024 lines by 1536 pixels
for each primary color. In seconds, an image file is created containing
over 4.5 million bytes of information.

The workstation uses this data to determine the exposure for all slides
automatically. State-of-the-art algorithms developed by Kodak make this
possible.

At the same time, an "electronic negative" is generated by reading and
inverting data from the three-color scan. This new negative then is
projected via patented CRT technology onto color negative paper by the
printer.

Features/Advantages

The Kodak digital PFX system offers photofinishers a variety of advantages
over traditional ways of obtaining prints from slides:

* High-quality prints result from the digital technology due to automatic
focusing and electronic image sharpening.

* Digital technology optimizes contrast range of slides for color negative
printing. This produces lower-contrast prints with increased highlight and
shadow detail.

* The system ensures a low makeover rate when using the scene balance
algorithm. A large color monitor assists in making color and density
corrections.

* Photofinishers should save time and money. The system reduces or
eliminates the need for separate Process R3 paper, chemicals and
processor, or the need for internegatives.

* The system offers high multiple print productivity of 400 pph.

* An auto slide handling accessory is available, allowing operatorless
printing.

Price/Availability

Customer trials for the Kodak digital PFX system will begin during the
first quarter of 1994, with availability in mid-1994. Details regarding
pricing will be available in the first quarter of 1994. For more
information, U.S. customers should contact their local Kodak
representative.
