Multi-Tech Brings V.32terbo Performance to X.25 Modems

MOUNDS VIEW, MINNESOTA--November 15, 1993--Mulff-Tech Systems Inc., a
leading data communications technology company, announced an
X.25-compatible MultiModemII based on AT&T's 16.8K/19.2K bps V32terbo open
standard. The MT1932XP combines the functions of a full duplex dial or
leased line modem, send/receive fax machine, X.25 PAD, and dial-up X.32
pad in a single desktop modem. The V.32terbo standard extends current 9.6K
and 14.4K bps modem technology by providing two new data rates in a scheme
otherwise like that of the 14.4K bps V32bis while maintaining
compatibility with lower-speed modems based on V.32bis, V32, V.22bis and
other common modulation standards. The MT1932XP comes bundled with
MultiExpress datacomm and MultiExpress Fax software, and will start
shipping in the first quarter of 1994 priced at $949 (U.S.).

According to Multi-Tech President Raghu Sharma, "This newest member of our
MultiModemII family is a multi-purpose communications system. Since it can
accommodate two phone lines (both a leased line and dial-up line), you can
use its leased line for X.25 PAD functions, and when not using the X.25
network, you can still use the dial-up line for send/receive fax and
dial-in/dial-out datacomm tasks. The dial-up line is also available for
automatic dial backup for the leased line by storing the appropriate phone
numbers in the modem's memory. We've bundled all the software you need for
X.25, data and fax operations so you don't have to shop for anything to
get started."

The MT1932XP supports up to four "virtual" X.25 or X.32 sessions through a
single PAD port. By using the MT1932XP with a PC running the bundled
MultiExpress data communications software (which includes special X.25
scripts), a user can establish the sessions with any node on the X.25
network. The multi-link capability of the MultiExpress software supports
the virtual sessions through a single comm port and permits "hot keying"
between the sessions via user-defined keystroke sequences. In X.25 mode,
the MT1932XP can operate over four or two wire leased lines with dial back
up. The MT1932XP can also operate in X.32 dial-up mode.

The MT1932XP also provides standard synchronous or asynchronous modem
operation over dedicated or dial-up phone lines using bundled MultiExpress
datacomm software. With the MT1932XP's V.32terbo modulation in
asynchronous mode, data rates up to 76.8K bps are possible via error
correction via V.42 and V.42bis "4-to-1" data compression, depending on
file content. The MT1932XP also includes a V.17/Group 3 fax modem with
bundled MultiExpress fax software (for 14.4K/9600/4800 bps fax
transmissions). The MT1932XP also includes all of the features and speeds
of the other MultiModemII products, with additional support for four-wire
leased-line operation.

UUCP spoofing using Munti-Tech's own adaptive protocol enhancing, speeds up
UUCP batch file transfers (UNIX) which use the "g" protocol. The MT1932XP
recognizes industry-standard "AT" commands for modem configuration and
dialing, supports V.25bis for synchronous dialing applications and has a
built-in dialing directory for storing up to 10 phone numbers. Three
RJ11s, or modular phone jacks, are available on the rear panel for
connecting the leased line, dial-up line and phone in addition to an RS232
serial port for connection to a sync or async device. A complete set of
LEDs provides easy visual monitoring of the modem's operation.

Multi-Tech Systems, which reported sales of $81 million for 1992, was
founded in 1970 to manufacture data communications equipment and systems
for the global market of networking product users. The Minnesota-based
company is well-known for its MultiModem line of dial-up communications
products. Munti-Tech's family of products include a complete line of
data/fax modems, MultiMux statistical multiplexers, DSUs, 3270/3780/5250
emulation systems, X.25 PADS/Switches, UNIX serial interfaces,
communications software, LAN/WAN connectivity products, and most recently,
the MultiModemPCS, a voice/data/fax personal communications system. These
products are sold in over 70 countries through a worldwide network of
distributors, manufacturer's reps, systems integrators, value-added
resellers (VARs) and retailers. Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. can be contacted
