New Boundary Scan Test Product Simplifies Testing of Non-scannable Logic

Los Altos, CA ... The AIS Boundary Scan Products Group has introduced the
ScanBox Probe/128 for the proTEST Boundary Scan Test Development System.
The ScanBox Probe/128 uses boundary scan parts to add control and
visibility to traces and logic otherwise untestable via scan. It is a 128
pin stimulus and response interface that increases test coverage to
include non-scannable parts. Multiple ScanBox Probe/128 cards can be used
to increase the pin count.

When a non-scannable circuit isn't surrounded by 1149.1 parts, it can't be
fully tested using boundary scan techniques. Similarly, non-scannable
logic between 1149.1 parts and edge connectors cannot be tested because
all sides are not bounded by scan cells. ScanBox Probe/128 test pins
connect to the target board's inputs and outputs via connectors or nails.
This places virtual scan cells around the periphery of the target board,
making otherwise untestable traces and logic scannable. AIS calls this
capability ScanWrap.

"Before ScanWrap, manufacturers were forced to build dedicated 1149.1
fixtures to control and observe the periphery of the target board,"
declared Julian Marshall AIS founder and President. "The ScanBox Probe/128
solves a problem that every modern electronics manufacturer has--fixturing
for boundary scan test. Unlike a custom fixture, it is a general purpose
device that can be it can be used to test any targets," Mr. Marshall
added.

"Incoming inspection and quality control groups find that boundary scan
testing is inexpensive and simple to administer. Many contract
manufacturers charge their customers considerably less to test scannable
targets, since increased board density and finer pitch IC packaging make
it difficult or impossible to test using methods other than 1149.1."

"AIS has taken the leadership position In 1149.1 testing. The ScanBox
Probe/128 is another step in addressing the market for 1149.1
manufacturing production test equipment. 1149.1 test is AIS's only
business," continued Mr. Marshall.

The ScanBox Probe/128 is priced at $1,095 (US list) FOB Los Altos. AIS
Boundary Scan Test Systems are priced from $7,995 to $30,000. The proTEST
System Is a set of hardware and software tools for testing ICs, boards and
system with IEEE Std 1149.1-1990 (JTAG). Delivery is 30 to 60 days
depending on configuration requirements.
