Waltham, MA --- BGS Systems, Inc. demonstrated Enterprise-Wide
Performance Assurance, a consistent approach to managing performance and
capacity across multiple platforms. Performance Assurance is a process
supported by an integrated suite of products for guaranteeing acceptable
service to critical business systems at optimal cost.

Performance Assurance centralizes performance and capacity management in
environments with client/server applications distributed across multiple
heterogeneous platforms. The key elements of the Performance Assurance
process include:

* Managing day-to-day performance by automating daily
reporting, generating intelligent exception alerts and
utilizing unique graphical techniques for bottleneck
  analysis.
* Tracking long term performance by trending and forecasting
workload activity and comparing actual to planned performance.
* Predicting the impact of change by test-driving tuning
  alternatives and sizing client/server configurations.
* Communicating with management and users on past, present and
future performance to provide support for recommendations and
  justify expenditures for resources.

The BEST/1 (R) products supporting the Performance Assurance process are
available now for UNIX, MVS, VM, OpenVMS and the AS/400. BEST/1 products
will be available for OS/2 in early 1994 and for Windows NT later in 1994.
As well, in 1994 the network capabilities of the products will be
extended from SNA wide area networks through to collecting, analyzing and
visualizing the performance of local area networks.

The BEST/1 products provide functionality for:

* Collecting raw performance data from multiple distributed
systems and centralizing it for management purposes.
* Analyzing the data and creating business oriented workloads
  which may span multiple nodes.
* Predicting the impact of workload and configuration changes
  using proven analytic modeling technology.
* Visualizing and communicating from the integrated performance
data base, on a regular basis automatically or on an ad hoc
  basis as required.

BEST/1 has evolved from a single capacity modeling product to a compre-
hensive suite supporting Enterprise-Wide Performance Assurance in response
to the forces driving Information Technology:

* Economic pressure on IT, which forces organizations to optimize
  resource usage while minimizing headcount.
* Rightsizing and client/server, which lead to a proliferation of
platforms and vendors, remote from the data center.
* Centralized management of distributed processing, which
attempts to leverage performance and capacity management skills
  across the enterprise.

Performance Assurance provides a consistent approach across the major
computing platforms in use today. This consistency, together with a high
degree of automation, allows existing personnel to support new platforms
while minimizing training requirements and implementation efforts.

The workstation-based BEST/1-Visualizer (TM) is positioned as a single
focal point for storing and visualizing complex information about multiple
platforms. This greatly facilitates operations, as well as communication
with management and users.

Those BEST/1 products which execute on the disparate platforms allow
consistent treatment of the various vendor variants. For example, BEST/1
for UNIX executing on a single IBM, HP or Sun workstation or server can
manage domains with mixed IBM, HP and Sun nodes. BGS has established
ongoing develop- ment and marketing alliances with the major vendors to
ensure the timely availability of new releases for rapidly changing
hardware and software.

With over 30,000 BEST/1 installations worldwide, BGS is a leader in
providing software products for enterprise-wide performance and capacity
mana- gement. BGS is committed to delivering intelligent solutions for
managing the complexity of today's diverse computing environments, from
single system organizations through to multi-system, multi-platform,
multi-site enterprises.
