MORE ABOUT DANIEL

The Daniel the Dinosaur series was conceived by Terry Leighton, a Speech
Language Pathologist, (CCC-SLP). She holds Bachelor's degrees in Speech
Communication and Psychology, and a Master's in Hearing and Speech. Terry
is the mother of two children, ages 3 and 6, and has worked with young
children professionally for 10 years. The idea for these programs evolved
from her work as a special pre-kindergarten teacher for 3 and 4 year old
children.

The children loved working with the computer - however, most programs
required additional prompts before the child could experience success. It
was usually necessary to adapt the material in order to teach a specific
concept or skill. The programs tended to have busy screens and address
multiple concepts in one program. Daniel was developed to present a single
concept at a time, using uncluttered screens. Both the screens and the
sound were designed to present the material with little distraction while
making the game fun for very young children to play.

The manual contains several hints about teaching the keyboard (2 keys) to
children. This interaction with the computer is an important concept in
itself; that of cause and effect. The SPACEBAR is the move key, the ENTER
key is the tell Daniel key.

The thrust of this program is SUCCESS. Cueing focuses the child's attention
on the correct answer if it has not been chosen the first time. If
necessary, the choices are reduced to one. This allows the child to
eventually select the correct answer and be rewarded.

Levels of complexity move from simple discrimination (one variable) to the
complex discrimination necessary for objects. The Overview section of the
program manual has a more detailed explanation of the progression through
the levels.

From the publishers:

Computers have a way of captivating a child's attention 8 providing an
outlet for their natural curiosity & love of exploration. We have designed
this program to promote independent use. However, adult supervision can
make a session at the computer a special time. We think learning should be
fun. We hope you will explore Daniel's world along with your child....and
let us know how it goes. ----- The Daniel Team
