Wolfram Research recently announced the Mathematica Symbolic Toolbox for
MATLAB Version 1.0. The Toolbox makes it easy to use Mathematica's
powerful symbolic and high-precision numeric capabilities from within
MATLAB.

The Mathematica Symbolic Toolbox for MATLAB allows users to construct
matrices in either Mathematica or MATLAB and pass them to the other, and
to freely mix Mathematica code and MATLAB code within a single
environment. The Mathematica Symbolic Toolbox for MATLAB is implemented
as a single MEX-file and is based on MathLink, a communication protocol
developed by Wolfram Research.

The Mathematica Symbolic Toolbox for MATLAB works with all MathLink-capable
versions of Mathematica 2.2. The Toolbox gives users full access to the
Mathematica kernel and Mathematica's high-level programming language from
MATLAB. With the Toolbox, MATLAB users can, for example, execute programs
created in Mathematica or access any one of Mathematica's hundreds of
mathematical functions directly from MATLAB.

The Toolbox provides a transparent connection between Mathematica and
MATLAB, with both programs running on the same computer or between
different computers on a network. This capability is especially useful in
schools and at corporate sites where Mathematica and MATLAB might be
licensed for different machines.

The Mathematica Symbolic Toolbox for MATLAB is available at no charge. It
requires MATLAB 3.5 or 4.x and a MathLink-capable version of Mathematica
Version 2.2, including Mathematica for Macintosh, Unix, NEXTSTEP, and
VAX/VMS machines (and soon Microsoft Windows 3.1 and Windows NT.)

Users can obtain a free copy of the Toolbox from MathSource, Wolfram
Research's electronic resource for Mathematica-related materials. To
request the Mathematica Symbolic Toolbox for MATLAB, users may connect via
anonymous ftp to mathsource.wri.com and look in the directory
/pub/WhatsNew for either the file matlab2math.sea.hqx (for Macintosh) or
matlab2math.tar.Z (for Unix). Or, users may simply send the email message
"send 0205-951" to mathsource@wri.com.

About MathLink

MathLink is a communication protocol developed by Wolfram Research that
lets users easily unite the capabilities of Mathematica with other
programs and applications in one integrated environment. Links can be
created to: call another program from Mathematica; call Mathematica from
another program; or call one or more Mathematica kernels from another
Mathematica kernel. This communication can take place between programs on
a single machine or between programs on different machines connected on a
network. The open architecture of MathLink allows users to easily create
links from their own programs to Mathematica, as well as between
Mathematica and commercial applications, such as MATLAB. For further
information call 1-800-441-MATH in the U.S. or +44-(0)993-883400 in
Europe.
