NEC LEAPS AHEAD WITH THE RELEASE OF ITS QUADRUPLE-SPEED CD-ROM READER

(Wood Dale, Ill., January 15, 1994) -- Once again proving its technological
strength and reinforcing its leadership position in the rapidly expanding
CD-ROM marketplace, NEC Technologies, Inc. today announced the release of
its MultiSpin 4X Pro CD-ROM reader. The new MultiSpin 4X Pro complements
the MultiSpin 3X Series of readers by providing a high-performance
external reader for use in development and professional applications. but
remains extremely easy to use by incorporating the award-winning design
and ergonomic innovations first introduced in the MultiSpin 3X Series.

"At NEC, we want to keep all our customers satisfied and excited about our
products," explained Marc Miller, vice president of NEC Technologies'
Advanced Media group. "By creating the MultiSpin 4X Pro, we've brought
professional developers and advanced users the CD-ROM technology they
need, but did not sacrifice the ease-of-use and ergonomic comfort we
introduced with the MultiSpin 3X Series."

The MultiSpin 4X Pro offers ultra-high performance for power users and
advanced applications. Data transfer speeds are four times that of
single-speed drives, transferring information at 600 KB/sec., and access
time for the MultiSpin 4X Pro is an amazing 180 milliseconds. The result
is the smoothest digital animation and video available, and the ability to
handle the most complex and intricate applications quickly, making the
user's overall CD-ROM experience more productive and rewarding.

Form and Function Emphasis Remains

While the MultiSpin 4X Pro is targeted toward the high-end applications
developers and professionals require, the reader does not lose the
functionality and user-friendly features made successful by the MultiSpin
3X Series of readers. The MultiSpin 4X Pro follows the same ErgoDesign
philosophy as the MultiSpin 3X Series. Features such as its "one-touch,"
rotating double-dust door, a full set of audio control buttons, and a
front panel three-mode LCD display incorporate themselves as extensions of
sculpted design rather than mere switches and lights. Its case is sleek
and modem, with smooth curves and contours that are part of the actual
function of the readers.

"Professionals and advanced users are just like the rest of us in that they
desire practicality, comfort and value," said Miller. "Because they are
not necessarily mainstream users does not mean that they want their
hardware to be complicated and difficult to operate. They want a product
that is easy to use and easy to maintain."

Features Abound Outside and In

The MultiSpin 4X Pro's advances show not only on the surface, but through
its inner features as well. NEC's Music Sensor gives users the ability to
play any music CD on the MultiSpin 4X Pro, using the reader's
face-mounted, ergonomic controls to direct playback and the reader's front
LCD display to give users playback information. The MultiSpin 4X Pro
Reader is compliant with Multimedia PC Level 2, Quicktime, XA Ready, and
Kodak Multisession Photo CD standards. Included with the reader is a
switchable dual SCSI 2/SCSI 1 interface port for enhanced compatibility
and easy peripheral daisy chaining. In addition, an automatic lens
cleaning system and the ability for the reader to be used in a vertical or
horizontal orientation make the MultiSpin 4X Pro self-maintaining and
practical.

Multiple-Platform Connectivity

The versatile design makes the MultiSpin 4X Pro compatible with a variety
of computer environments like Windows, Macintosh or DOS, and with
different platforms through interface kits available for PS/2 and AT
compatibles, and Macintosh. In addition, laptop computers can use the
MultiSpin 4X Pro without installation of an interface board. The Enhanced
Parallel-to-SCSI (EPP) interface is available so that portable users
simply connect the EPP cable to their Enhanced Parallel Port. EPP supports
up to 1MB/sec transfer, so it can fully support both MultiSpin 3X and 4X
Pro readers with absolutely no loss in performance. All of these features
make the MultiSpin 4X Pro not only a top performer, but a user-oriented,
value-packed investment that will allow users to posses the highest
performance available without the fear of being outmoded.

Warranty, Shipping and Pricing

Estimated selling price for the MultiSpin 4X Pro CD-ROM Reader is $995. The
MultiSpin 4X Pro begins shipping on January 15, 1994, and will be
available through NEC's nationwide network of authorized dealers. In
addition to receiving NEC's high quality and performance, users also
receive NEC's industry-leading customer support. NEC backs its MultiSpin
CD-ROM Readers with a two-year warranty -- twice as long as most CD-ROM
warranties -- and provides toll-free technical assistance.
