FASTEN YOUR SEAT BELT! THE CLASSIC CARTOON "SPEED RACER" IS SPEEDING ITS
WAY TO THE SEGA GENESIS

Category: Arcade/Racing
Price and Availability: Sega Genesis, $69.95 - March 1994

LAS VEGAS, NV-JANUARY 6, 1994--Accolade, a leading publisher of
entertainment software, invites visitors attending the Winter Consumer
Electronics to their booth #6531, Pavillion B, for a demonstration of
Speed Racer in: The Challenge of Racer X for the Sega Genesis. Seen here
for the first time, the video game is based on Speed Racer, one of the
most successful cartoons ever shown on American television and now shown
twice daily on MTV. Speed Racer in: The Challenge of Racer X is scheduled
to release in March at a suggested retail price of $69.95.

In this high speed racing game, players can assume the role of the
courageous teenage driver Speed Racer, racing the amazing Mach 5, or
choose to race as the mysterious Racer X in this Formula 1 Race Car, "The
Shooting Star." Speed Racer in: The Challenge of Racer X will have players
testing their racing skills as they maneuver through seven progressively
difficult levels in six high-octane tracks. A grueling 42 legs in all,
each is based on plots and episodes of the original series like, Danger
Pass, the Snake Track, and the Valley of Destruction. The split-screen
mode lets players race head-to-head against a friend in a vigorous chase
to the finish

To win the race players must match their skills and wits against up to
sixteen notorious villains such as Captain Terror, Snake Oiler, and the
Gang of Assassins. Players can supercharge the Mach 5 by adding a variety
of gadgets, all faithful to the original series -- Canopy to protect from
ricocheting bullets, gripper tires useful on oil slicks or slippery
comers, autojacks to jump short distances at high speeds and chopper
blades to mow down opponents and slash through obstacles.

Speed Racer in: The Challenge of Racer X will incorporate the personalities
of the major characters from the cartoon series including Speed Racer, his
spunky girlfriend Trixie; his little brother, Spridle; Speed's father and
designer of the amazing Mach 5, Pops Racer and the mysterious Racer X.
Ironically, Racer X is both Speed's greatest competitor and secret
protector, and in reality is actually Rex Racer, Speed's older brother who
now works undercover as a top secret Interpol agent.

During each race, players will see the animated faces and hear the
digitized voices of Speed Racer, Trixie, Racer X, as well as Captain
Terror and the other notorious villains on the Mach 5's incredible
on-board view screen. There your friends cheer you on, comment on your
progress, or alert you of danger. The villains taunt you and warn you of
their approach.

The Super Nintendo version, Speed Racer in: My Most Dangerous Adventures,
will also be available in March. Both video game formats will feature the
familiar "Go Speed Racer Go" theme song. Each will take advantage of the
different features the two video game systems offer and will be designed
to attract the two different audiences--slightly older for the Sega
Genesis, and slightly younger for the Super Nintendo Entertainment
System.

Speed Racer is a cartoon character that became an instant hit when it first
appeared on American television in 1967. Accolade has an exclusive,
worldwide long-term licensing agreement with Speed Racer Enterprises to
develop and publish computer and video games based on the Classic Speed
Racer animated series as well as on the current hit series "The New
Adventures of Speed Racer".

"Over 40 million fans grew up watching Speed Racer, and with the program
airing in syndication, we are very excited to introduce it to a brand new
audience," said James Rocknowski, Vice President of Licensing for Speed
Racer Enterprises. "It naturally lends itself to the computer and video
game arena, and I'm pleased Accolade will be bringing it to market so that
Speed Racer fans everywhere can experience the thrill of racing Speed
Racer's incredible Mach 5."
