UK Insurance Provider Chooses Sybase over Oracle and Will Deploy SYBASE
Solutions in 180 Branches Throughout the UK

EMERYVILLE, CA, January 10, 1994 -- Sybase, Inc., the Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced that Prudential Assurance Company,
Ltd. has selected the SYBASE System 10 client/server-based relational
database management system (RDBMS) for deployment throughout Prudential's
180 branch offices in the United Kingdom. In a pilot project, SYBASE SQL
Server 10 database servers are now installed at several Prudential branch
offices. The system is currently being rolled out and is expected to be
fully implemented by the end of 1994.

"As part of our selection process, we evaluated Oracle, Ingres, Informix,
and SYBASE products," said Ron Skelley, systems development manager for
Prudential's Home Services. "We believe Sybase has the right approach to
technology and was able to not only meet but exceed our specifications. In
addition, the company's strategic direction maps to our plans very closely
and will help us stay competitive in the future."

The system under development is designed to support Prudential's 9,000
sales representatives throughout the United Kingdom. When fully
implemented, the installation will allow the insurance provider's sales
department to match products with existing and potential customers. "We
are confident that we chose the best solution, and that we will obtain
significant benefits from making timely and reliable information available
to our sales force," commented Ron Skelley. The complete SYBASE
installation will include a suite of customer information applications
that integrates disparate information from various departments at
Prudential and presents it in a way that is meaningful and easy to use by
the company's sales force.

"We are very pleased with the success we are enjoying in Europe and
particularly in the United Kingdom," said Stewart Schuster, vice president
of marketing at Sybase. "The insurance industry is a strategic market for
Sybase, and we provide the interoperability and open architecture for the
information intensive and rapidly changing environments insurance
companies operate in. For companies like Prudential Assurance, it is
important to partner with vendors who provide the open architecture,
connectivity, and services that allow them to introduce leading-edge
technology while leveraging existing investments through interoperability
with Prudential's IBM Mainframe environment."

Prudential Assurance Company, Ltd.

With more than 30,000 employees and over eight million customers worldwide,
Prudential Assurance is the largest provider of life insurance and
pensions in Great Britain. Prudential Assurance is Britain's largest
institutional investor, managing funds in excess of 60 billion (U.S. $89.4
billion), which gives the company control of more than 3.5% of all shares
listed on the London Stock Market. As part of its international investment
strategy, Prudential owns Jackson National Life, one of the
fastest-growing life insurance companies in the U.S.

The Products

The pilot installation consists of SYBASE SQL Server software on HP 9000
Series 827 workstations which are installed at 11 branch offices,
connected to an IBM SNA network via X.25. In addition to Sybase's SQL
Server 10, the contract includes: The Open Server for CICS software for
accessing IBM MVS environments; SA Companion, a systems management
product; Sybase's debugging and testing tool SQL Debug; and the SQR report
writer.

"In a client/server environment, it is important to not only choose a
vendor, but a strategic partner who works with our other partners to
provide an integrated solution that meets our requirements," commented Ron
Skelley. "Prudential will greatly benefit from the strong partnership
between Sybase and Hewlett-Packard, who provides the hardware platform for
this installation."
