U.S. ROBOTICS POSITIONED TO LEAD FAX SERVER MARKET WITH LOW-COST INTEGRATED
FAX SOLUTION

Company Introduces Powerful Windows/DOS Network Fax Solution Supporting
Unlimited Users for $2495

SKOKIE, Ill., -- January 24, 1994 -- U.S. Robotics today announced pricing,
features and availability for its new Shared Access FAX servers. The
products' competitive pricing, which includes a license for an unlimited
number of users, positions the company to capture a significant share of
the growing fax server market. The Shared Access FAX server Ethernet and
Shared Access FAX server Token Ring, list priced at $2495 and $2795,
respectively, will be available in late February.

"The fax server market represents a new opportunity for the Shared Access
line," said Jonathan Zakin, U.S. Robotics executive vice president. "Our
channel strength, marketing capabilities and expertise in desktop fax
technology give us some advantages in this market. We also hope to help
grow the fax server market by establishing pricing that makes network fax
technology more available for a larger number of customers."

The Shared Access FAX servers are two-port devices providing network-based
fax capabilities for Novell Ethernet and Token Ring networks. The products
combine the Shared Access network communications hardware platform with
award-winning FACSys Windows and DOS network fax software from Optus
Software, Inc. to create a complete, low-cost, inbound and outbound
dedicated fax solution.

"Our products fill a void in the network fax market," added Zakin. "They
have two primary advantages: they are integrated solutions, combining
hardware, software and cabling in a single package, and are reasonably
priced, supporting any number of users for the same one-time cost."
Current network fax offerings are primarily limited to high-priced
integrated solutions and software-only solutions, which require a costly
build-it-yourself hardware platform (a PC, network interface card and fax
modem), and may also require the purchase of a software license for each
user.

The Shared Access FAX servers also support the CAS API (Applications
Programming Interface) for compatibility with fax applications such as
WinFax Pro, and the FAXBios API, for direct faxing from popular programs
such as Word Perfect 6.0. Additionally, users of several leading email
programs, such as cc:Mail and Microsoft Mail, can take advantage of the
products' MHS compatibility, using their mailboxes to send and receive
faxes directly.

FAX servers Address Needs of Both Resellers and End Users

The integrated design of U. S. Robotics' Shared Access FAX servers provides
a network fax solution for both resellers and end users, giving them
several advantages over current products.

According to a recent study, resellers cite compatibility and ease of
installation as their top two criteria for purchasing Ethernet and Token
Ring products [Source: CMP Publications, Inc.]. The Shared Access FAX
servers supply proven fax compatibility, backed by U.S. Robotics'
expertise in the desktop fax market. They are also easy to install, and
provide a one-vendor solution that simplifies support issues.

For end users, the Shared Access FAX servers provide a cost advantage,
supporting unlimited users and eliminating the hassle of purchasing
additional user licenses. Additionally, the products support both Windows
and DOS, with a common user interface and menu structure for ease of
training and support. The FAX servers also include management
capabilities, so network administrators can easily pinpoint and solve
potential problems and users can check the status of outgoing faxes right
from their desktop.

Users can even access the Shared Access FAX server client software remotely
via a remote session on the Shared Access COM server or LAN modem to check
on the status of an inbound fax or to send or receive a fax from the
network.

"The customer really gets the best of both worlds -- the products combine
our expertise in the facsimile arena and our strong LAN communications
hardware platform with the leading network fax software, which has been
recognized for its ease of use and friendly user interface," said Todd
Landry, U.S. Robotics product manager, Shared Access, who has been
involved in the facsimile industry and standards committees for the last
several years.

Fax Routing Capabilities and Additional Features

The products support several methods of inbound fax routing, including CSID
(called subscriber identification), Automatic Line Routing, OCR (optical
character recognition) and Administrative (manual) Routing. Faxes may also
be routed internally to other users on the network.

Additionally, U.S. Robotics' FAX servers also support multiple phonebooks,
including a persona! phonebook, a system phonebook and a general
phonebook. This allows commonly-used numbers to be shared on the network
for easy access, while allowing each user to maintain a phonebook of
personal contacts. Users may also take advantage of features such as group
broadcast, fax scheduling, custom cover sheets, cover page logos and the
addition of personal signatures to a fax.

The Shared Access FAX servers are two-port devices; the products include an
RS-232 port to which users may attach any U. S. Robotics high-speed fax
modem for full two-port operation.

The fax server market will roughly double in size from 1993 to 1994; the
domestic market alone for fax server products will reach a half-billion
dollars by 1997 [Source: BIS Strategic Decisions].

The Shared Access FAX server Ethernet and Shared Access FAX server Token
Ring are companion products to the company's COM server and LAN modem,
which provide dial-out capabilities and remote LAN access via remote
control and remote node. Shared Access products are designed to provide
network communications capabilities for any size LAN.
