U.S. ROBOTICS ADDS THREE NEW PRODUCTS TO SHARED ACCESS LINE

Three Key LAN Communications Products Broaden Shared Access Line: FAX
server, Dial-up Router, Open Platform COM server

SKOKIE, Ill., -- January 24, 1994 -- U. S. Robotics today announced three
new products in its Shared Access network communications product line. The
new products, the Shared Access FAX server, the Shared Access COM server
and the Shared Access LAN modem 2.0 provide new capabilities and increased
performance. All three products will be available in March.

The Shared Access FAX server provides inbound and outbound network-based
fax capabilities for Novell networks. The Shared Access LAN modem 2.0 is a
two-port dial-up router, for transparent LAN-to-LAN communications and
remote TCP/IP access for mobile users. The Shared Access COM server is a
powerful, 486-based open platform product that may be used for remote
control, mail routing, modem sharing and other applications.

The COM server and LAN modem 2.0 replace the existing Shared Access
Communication Server 386 and Shared Access LAN modem.

"These products broaden and strengthen the Shared Access line," said
Jonathan Zakin, U.S. Robotics executive vice president. "The line
previously focused on remote access; the new products give our customers
solutions to a wider variety of LAN communications problems, including
remote access, network-based fax, electronic mail routing, modem sharing
and LAN-to-LAN routing. "

SHARED ACCESS FAX SERVER

The Shared Access FAX server supports unlimited users, providing inbound
and outbound network-based fax capabilities for Novell Ethernet and Token
Ring networks, plus automatic routing of inbound faxes. The product
includes both hardware and software, combining the Shared Access network
communications hardware platform with award-winning FACSys Windows and DOS
network fax software from Optus Software, Inc.

The Shared Access FAX server supports the CAS API (Applications Programming
Interface), for compatibility with fax applications such as WinFax Pro,
and the FAXBios API, for direct faxing from popular programs such as Word
Perfect 6.0. Additionally, users of several leading email programs, such
as cc:Mail and Microsoft Mail, can take advantage of the product's MHS
compatibility, using their mailboxes to send and receive faxes directly.

The FAX server is a two-port product, including one ITU-T V.17 fax modem
for 14,400 bps faxing. Users may take advantage of the second port by
connecting any U. S. Robotics high-speed fax modem. The Shared Access fax
modem within the FAX server is also upgradable to future fax standards,
including potential standards for 28,800 bps faxing.

The product will ship in late February; list prices are $2495 for Ethernet;
$2795 for Token Ring.

SHARED ACCESS LAN MODEM 2.0

The Shared Access LAN modem 2.0 is a two-port dial-up router, providing
dial-up LAN-to-LAN routing for IPX inter-network communications. It also
provides PPP support, for IP dial-in from popular applications such as
Novell's LAN Workplace and NetManage's Chameleon.

The product also supports remote node access, and includes Dynamic Access
Switching, for "on-the-fly" switching between remote node and remote
control during the same connection using one of many popular remote
control packages. Additionally, the LAN modem 2.0 provides ease of use
features, including a "quick-dial" icon, which allows automatic
connections to preprogrammed telephone numbers; and "auto-connect," the
ability to automatically dial a remote LAN when an application needs to
access information on it. The product includes drivers for dial-out using
either NASI or INT 14 APIs.

The LAN modem 2.0 will ship in March. The product's list price is $1995 for
the Ethernet version; $2495 for Token Ring.

SHARED ACCESS COM SERVER

The COM server provides a powerful, two-port 486-based open platform,
replacing the existing single-port, 386-based Communication Server 386.
The new open platform, not previously available in Shared Access products,
supports a variety of industry-recognized LAN communications software,
including remote control, mail routing and modem sharing products,
allowing customers to tailor the product to a variety of applications.

The COM server includes a Shared Access V.32 terbo modem for 19.2 Kbps data
transmission; Adaptive Speed Leveling further boosts the modem speed to
21.6 Kbps. The modem is V.34-ready via a FLASH ROM software download for
future compatibility with the forthcoming ITU-T V.34 standard for 28.8
Kbps. The modem also includes backwards compatibility with popular modem
protocols such as V.32 bis and V.32.

The COM server will ship in March. The product's list price is $1995 for
the Ethernet version; $2495 for Token Ring.

Remote Offices, Mobile Users Fuel Strong Market Growth

Forrester Research predicts that the total market for remote access
products will reach 2.8 billion by 1997. Growth in the dial-up router
market will be fueled by several applications: remote single-user access,
including telecommuters and mobile users; small remote site interconnect;
remote network management; and redundant backup to leased lines [Source:
Dataquest].

Dramatic growth is also predicted in the fax server market; the fax server
market will roughly double in size from 1993 to 1994. The domestic market
alone for fax server products is expected to reach a half-billion dollars
by 1997 [Source: BIS Strategic Decisions].
