Release 2.0 of the VESA local bus (VL-Bus) standard, which adds features
and maintains backward compatibility with the 1.0 release, was recently
approved. New features include 64-bit device support and connector timing
speeds up to 50 MHz. The new specification directly supports 64-bit
microprocessors, such as Intel's Pentium. The 64-bit expansion lets
systems with such processors effectively double the available local bus
bandwidth while still allowing existing 32-bit VL-Bus boards to coexist in
the system. The 64-bit extension employs the current 32-bit connector by
multiplexing the added 32 address and data bits. By increasing the
connector timing-speed support to 50 MHz, the stability of connectors and
components is improved. In addition, the 50MHz operation allows data rates
up to 266 Mbytes/s. Other new features include CPU write-back caching and
support for signal bridges and mexxanine-bus architectures.
