Daniel Corbier announces the release of "Shareware Author & User Case
Study". This document answers questions frequently asked by shareware
authors. The answers are based on direct comments from a number of well
known successful authors, and a shareware user survey. Here's a sample of
some of the topics that are covered:

 What motivates users to register?
What reasons do users give for not registering?
How much are people willing to pay?
Which methods of payment do people use?
 What kind of users register?
 What percentage of users register?
How do successful authors get their programs "out there"?
Which channels of distribution are more effective?
What makes some programs stand above the crowd & get publicity?
How long does it take to succeed?
Should an author charge for upgrades?
Do crippling & nagging techniques really work?
How does a program get copyrighted?
How long do users take to evaluate programs before paying?
 etc...

The document also includes a glossary with terms shareware authors are
likely to encounter, and also an appendix which lists a few major
distribution channels for authors to get started. The file name to look
for is SAUCS1 (with the extension ARJ, SDN, or ZIP, etc...). You should
find it on BBSes which get SDN or PDN files. You can also find a copy on
EXEC-PC, garbo.uwasa.fi, Delphi, etc... The compressed file is around 42K.
I'm always interested in user comments.
