PRESIDENT CLINTON VISITS SYBASE CUSTOMER

President Reviews Focus:HOPE Project - High-Tech Software to Train and
Employ Minority Young Adults

EMERYVILLE, CA, March 14,1994 -- Sybase, Inc. today announced that
President Clinton visited one of its customer sites, the Focus:HOPE Center
for Advanced Technologies (CAT) in Detroit yesterday, Sunday, March 13.
The visit marked the beginning of a special Group of 7 Jobs Conference,
which President Clinton will host in Detroit this week. Focus:HOPE is a
civil and human rights non-profit organization implementing
high-technology to train Detroit young adults for manufacturing
engineering jobs and create new jobs in the local and national economy. At
the heart of the computer-based training program is Sybase's Gain
Momentum, multimedia software running on the SYBASE SQL Server 10
relational database system. Along with the purchase of software, Sybase
donated more than $1 million worth of software to the program. Sybase,
Inc. is a leading San Francisco-area client/server relational database
software and services supplier.

Focus:HOPE founder, Father William Cunningham, took the president on a
one-hour tour of the CAT facilities to show him what a 21st-century
manufacturing facility could be like, complete with electronic training
systems and intelligent database and data management systems. One of the
highlights of this high-tech tour is the fact that, rather than replacing
workers, the technology in this factory is training young minority men and
women for more growth opportunities in technical fields.

Stu Schuster, Sybase executive vice president of marketing, commented, "We
are delighted to contribute to this important program. As technology
providers, we understand the critical role we can play to promote the
American economy, from helping businesses become more competitive, to
providing the training and jobs we'll need to run those businesses going
into the next century. We see multimedia technologies, such as our Gain
Momentum product, which are geared to provide advanced skills training for
users without any prior computer knowledge, as key tools in enabling
training for the future."

CAT at Focus:HOPE

Under the direction of Father Cunningham and CAT Systems Manager Lance
Mitchell, CAT candidates are learning a full range of manufacturing
skills, from designing parts to shipping them, in a real-world
environment, complete with realworld technology and real-world production
pressures. Recently, CAT began selling some of its parts to local auto
manufacturers, such as the Ford Motor Company.

"At the Center for Advanced Technology we are putting in place the most
comprehensive program for the electronic delivery of information," said
Lance Mitchell. "Our relationship with Sybase has allowed us to implement
the distributed environment needed to achieve a task of this magnitude.
Sybase has provided us with a flexible client/server framework that allows
us to manage all aspects of the Center for Advanced Technology, ranging
from dynamic production facilities to an advanced learning environment
that addresses the new and extremely diverse needs of today's work
environments."

Sybase Products at CAT

Sybase's relational database management system software, SQL Server 10,
issued across the CAT enterprise, storing information on CAT students, the
factory inventory, engineering tools, etc. SYBASE was chosen as the
database standard for the facility because of its open and scalable
architecture. Systems integrator CTA worked with CAT to implement
state-of-the-art technology from Sybase and other vendors. CAT plans to
keep pace with changes in manufacturing technology and therefore requires
flexible and open client/server computing software that can operate in an
increasingly heterogeneous environment.

In addition, Sybase's client/server tool for multimedia application
development, Gain Momentum was chosen for the development of integrated,
multimedia performance support systems that will be used to teach students
the complete manufacturing process, from the design of a part to its
shipment. This allows students to go through the learning process in a
self-paced, performanced-based way while interacting with the
manufacturing floor.

Focus:HOPE

Focus:HOPE is a civil and human rights non-profit organization founded in
1968 following the Detroit race riots. Founder, Father William Cunningham
created Focus:HOPE to help ease the effects of race discrimination and
injustice. Father Cunningham runs many projects, ranging from the
country's largest food distribution program to the Center for Advanced
Technologies (CAT), the newest addition to Focus:HOPE. CAT provides
state-of-the-art education and training facilities in manufacturing
engineering.

Colorado-based systems integrator/enterprise engineering firm, CTA,
partnered with Focus:HOPE to put in place a computer infrastructure that
accurately reflects a next-generation manufacturing environment. CTA is
employed by Focus:HOPE to select software and hardware products and
develop applications that provide an integrated manufacturing and on-line
training environment.
