EPOCH AND SYBASE ANNOUNCE AGREEMENT TO DELIVER ADVANCED DATABASE BACKUP
CAPABILITY

Companies Join Forces to Offer Enhanced Client/Server Database Backup for
Very Large Database Customers

EMERYVILLE, CA, March 15,1994 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise Client/Server
Company, and Epoch Systems, a leading vendor of client/server storage
management software, today announced an agreement that will provide for
the development of an enhanced mainframe-class backup solution to
client/server customers with very large database (VLDB) environments.

Under the terms of the agreement, Epoch and Sybase will integrate Epoch
Enterprise Backup, a leading client/server backup software, with Sybase's
Backup Server, the integrated SQL Server backup product in Sybase's System
1.0 family. This solution will offer advanced backup capabilities to
enterprise client/server customers including: 1) support for backup
cataloguing 2) tape and optical robotic systems and 3) advanced scheduling
and management systems. These additional features will benefit VLDB users
by enhancing both backup and restore procedures, making them more
manageable, efficient, and faster.

"We are pleased to team with Epoch on a backup solution tailored to the
requirements of VLDB users," said Karen Frederiksen, director of Sybase's
Server Products Group. "Epoch delivers an innovative class of backup
products for enterprise client/server customers, and we believe that our
joint development efforts will leverage the expertise of both Sybase and
Epoch in server backup technology."

As part of this collaborative development effort, Sybase will add a new
application programming interface (API) to Backup Server that enables
customers to use Epoch Enterprise Backup. In addition, Sybase will
integrate the archive striping feature of System 10 Backup Server with
Epoch Enterprise Backup. Striping in the server provides optimal
performance and dynamic scaling which is of utmost importance for the VLDB
community.

Epoch, in turn, will provide the support for backup cataloguing, tape and
optical robotic systems and advanced scheduling and media management.
Epoch has also developed additional features within Epoch Backup to
optimize the backup process for customers with heavy on-line transaction
processing (OLTP) database applications. Sybase and Epoch are proactively
addressing the VLDB business requirement through a coupling of their
technology and support. Both companies will support the integrated
product; Sybase through its Data Server Engineering (DSE) and Epoch
through its Customer Service and Support (CSS) organization. Product
availability is expected by the end of Q3 1994.

Daniel J. Cronin, vice president of marketing at Epoch Systems, commented,
"Sybase is a clear leader in the client/server enterprise data management
marketplace. We are pleased to jointly provide a seamless database backup
solution incorporating Epoch Enterprise Backup. Together, we are offering
the database market the best client/server backup solution possible."

Epoch Enterprise Backup

Epoch Enterprise Backup is a leading client/server backup and storage
management software. Epoch Enterprise Backup is distinguished from other
backup products by its advanced, mainframe-class features including the
first knowledgebased, intelligent auto-scheduler, as well as monitoring,
reporting, and self-service recovery.

Epoch Enterprise Backup provides comprehensive backup/recovery with
automatic on-line backups of the client and server files. It is the only
client/server software optimized for both the technology and commercial
markets with support for RDBMSs, UNIX file systems, Novell servers, and
mainframe tape silos. The product delivers extensive volume and library
management: it automatically controls, schedules and tracks all removable
media and integrates robotic optical disk and tape libraries. It knows
exactly where each file is stored and automatically labels, records, and
mounts file systems and backups.

Sybase Backup Server

Backup Server software, which comes bundled with SQL Server 10, provides
high-performance backup, loading, and recovery for very large databases -
up to hundreds of gigabytes - with control functions for both local and
remote backup. Because Backup Server offloads data backup from the server,
dumping minimizes the impact on running applications and increases the
capacity of the server. Other benefits include around-the-clock control of
databases ranging from tens to hundreds of gigabytes in size, lights-out
operations, and recovery for site outages and disaster recovery.

Epoch Systems, Inc.

Epoch Systems, Inc. is a leading vendor of client/server storage management
software for the enterprise. Epoch products are targeted at users of
workstations and servers in business, industry, education, and government.
The company has partnerships with Auspex, DEC, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi,
Oracle, Silicon Graphics, StorageTek, Sun, Sybase, Tivoli, and others. It
is also one of the founding members of the Data Management Interfaces
Group (DMIG), established to develop industry standard UNIX data
management interfaces. Headquartered in Westborough, MA, Epoch has more
than 26 sales and support offices located throughout the U.S., Canada,
Europe, and Asia.

Sybase, Inc.

Sybase, Inc. (NASDAQ: SYBS) develops and markets a leading family of
