High-Performance Banyan VINES Print Servers Announced

Provide Direct Printer Connections to Token-Ring Networks

BOISE, Idaho March 18, 1994--Today, Extended Systems announced significant
enhancements to its family of high-performance Banyan VINES print servers.
Now, Token-Ring VINES administrators can enjoy the benefits of direct
network attachment for all their printer needs.

Connect Virtually Any Printer

PocketPrintServer ESI-2845A allows virtually any Centronics-interface
printer to be connected directly to Token-Ring media, anywhere on the
network. PocketPrintServer acts as a full-function print server, replacing
dedicated PCs using PCPrint. ExtendNet ESI-2846A provides similar print
server capabilities, but is optimized for HP LaserJet printers, permitting
connection anywhere on a Token-Ring network. ExtendNet acts as a
full-featured print server, installing in the interface slot of any HP
LaserJet 4, 4M, 4Si or IIISi printer. A network attachment is made via UTP
(RJ45) or STP (DB9) cabling connections. Both common Token-Ring media
types are supported on the same product to reduce confusion and increase
flexibility.

Outstanding Benefits To Network Administrators

The benefits to administrators and users of these hardware print servers
are numerous. Print data moves to the printer at rates 10-30 times faster
than possible through PCPrint, removing bottlenecks and speeding print
jobs. Network supervisors have fewer PCs to manage, increasing reliability
and decreasing support costs. Best of all, printers can be placed where
they are most beneficial: close to the users. Printers can easily be moved
around the network to meet changing printing requirements.

Easy Upgrades Protect Investment

To answer network administrators' requests for a convenient, reliable
upgrade path, both ExtendNet and PocketPrintServer use Flash memory for
easy enhancements. With Flash memory, supervisors can remotely update
print-server software on a single unit or on hundreds of servers
distributed across an entire network, all from one central location. Many
other print-server products require network administrators to individually
remove and replace ROM or SIMM modules to accomplish upgrades; by
contrast, Extended Systems products permit software updates remotely.

High-Performance, Low-Cost Solutions

"We believe a critical issue for Banyan network administrators today is the
need for powerful, flexible printing solutions," said Clay Young, Network
Printing Marketing Manager. Printing remains the number one VINES
application, yet most print servers have been quite limited in their
adaptability. "ExtendNet and PocketPrintServer represent a breakthrough in
flexibility. The combination of performance, upgradability and low price
make them the print servers of choice in VINES environments," said Young.
Both the new ExtendNet ESI-2846A and PocketPrintServer ESI-2845A carry a
US list price of $995. They are the least expensive Token-Ring print
servers for Banyan VINES environments.
