Gupta Customers Gain Access to Lotus Notes Data

Integrating structured corporate data with unstructured Lotus Notes data
has become an increasing challenge for application developers, and in
October 1993, Gupta and Lotus Development Corporation announced a powerful
solution. The solution is that Gupta will provide functionality in its
tools that allows customers to create applications that query both
traditional structured DBMS data and the unstructured data stored by
Notes.

About the new integration of SQL and Lotus Notes data, Umang Gupta,
president of Gupta Corporation said, "The rise of unstructured data types
made possible by products like Lotus Notes is a fact of life for many
corporate managers who rely on data analysis to tap their department's or
company's experience on a given matter. The interests of our customers and
Gupta's long history as a leader in SQL data management on PCs makes
delivering the integration of unstructured Notes data with structured
corporate data an imperative. By targeting Notes as the leading repository
of unstructured data, we'll also leverage the two companies' respective
contributions to collaborative and team computing."

Gupta customers to get mail capabilities

The Gupta link-up with Lotus Notes will result in a series of enhancements
to SQLWindows and Quest. Both products will be enhanced with mail
capabilities, which means that applications developed with Gupta products
will be able to send, receive and view mail messages as well as distribute
application modules using Notes services. The mail features are expected
in early 1994.

In the second half of 1994, major releases of Gupta tools will fully
incorporate the Notes Application Programming Interface (API), which will
allow SQLWindows developers to build applications that read and write to
Notes databases. Developers will be able to use Notes as a storage and
software distribution system for deploying SQLWindows applications or
their components. Developers will also be able to store Quest queries,
forms, graphics, and reports directly in Notes databases. The goal is to
make SQLWindows and Quest the tools of choice for developers who integrate
structured and unstructured data.

Global team development with SQLWindows and Notes

Lotus Notes reportedly has an installed base of more than 2,000 companies,
with nearly half a million people using the product in customer service,
sales and account management, and product development. Because of Notes'
strong workgroup computing capabilities, the product will greatly extend
the ability of SQLWindows development teams to create enterprise-wide
client/server projects, particularly in cases where the teams are
scattered around the globe. Notes will be an excellent tool for developers
to use in collaborative planning for SQLWindows applications and in
carrying out beta testing. Notes databases and mail will also be useful
for distributing finished applications.

MIS professionals have expressed strong support for Gupta's technology
partnership with Lotus. "It's much better for Gupta and Lotus to solve the
problem of integrating structured and
unstructured data for us, rather than for developers to create their own
unique solutions via the Notes API," said Nick Burnard, director of MIS
for Lawson-Mardon Group in Bristol, UK. "The Gupta/Lotus solution will
save developers a lot of work and increase the robustness of our
applications."
