Microsoft To Deliver Office, Works and FoxPro for Power Macintosh
This Summer

Power Guarantee Means Users Can Get Applications Now and Upgrade to New
Power Macintosh Versions Automatically

NEW YORK--March 14, 1994--Microsoft Corporation today announced that new
versions of the Microsoft Office business productivity
applications--including Microsoft Excel, Word and the PowerPoint
presentation graphics program; the Microsoft Works integrated application;
and the Microsoft FoxPro database management system for the new Power
Macintosh systems--are under development and are scheduled to be delivered
this summer. These new versions will be optimized to run on the Power
Macintosh computer, a new RISC-based Macintosh system introduced today by
Apple Computer, Inc. Microsoft also announced the Power Guarantee program,
which entitles customers who acquire versions of the above-named products
for the Motorola 68000 family of microprocessors on or after April 1,
1994, to receive an upgrade when the new versions ship, at no charge other
than shipping and handling.

Enhanced User Experience

Applications running on the new PowerPC systems run faster than the same
products on 68K-based Macintosh computers. Although still in development,
the Microsoft applications are showing signs of increased performance.
"We're seeing significant speed improvements in the versions of Word and
Microsoft Excel for the Power Macintosh," said Ben Waldman, manager of
Macintosh technology at Microsoft. "Word and Microsoft Excel support for
technologies such as AppleScript, PowerTaLk, QuickDraw GX, and OLE 2.0
combined with the speed of the PowerPC chip means that users can
accomplish their tasks more quickly and efficiently than ever before."

Power Guarantee

The Microsoft Power Guarantee will allow customers who acquire today's
version of Microsoft Office to update at no charge to the next-generation
product when it is available. The Power Guarantee allows customers to
update to either a new version for 68K-based Macintosh computers or a
version for the Power Macintosh and applies to purchases made on April 1,
1994 or later. The Guarantee applies to the following Microsoft
applications for the Macintosh: Microsoft Office version 3.0; Microsoft
Word version 5.1; Microsoft Excel version 4.0; Microsoft PowerPoint
version 3.0.

"The Power Guarantee is a great program for all customers who plan to
purchase a Power Macintosh--they can get the best desktop software
applications available now, with the assurance that they'll be first in
line to receive the hottest new versions of those applications for Power
Macintosh as soon as they're available," said Pete Higgins, senior vice
president of desktop applications for Microsoft. "We intend to deliver the
best applications for the Power Macintosh, and the Power Guarantee
underscores our commitment."

Compatibility with Current Software

Until the new versions are available, users will be able to run current
versions of Microsoft applications for the 68K-based Macintosh or the new
Power Macintosh systems. This means users can get the benefits of using
Microsoft Office now and transition to native applications this summer.
"Microsoft has been delivering great applications for the Macintosh for
more than 10 years," said Higgins. "We're excited about extending our
commitment to the Power Macintosh so that customers can use applications
that work seamlessly together regardless of the platform they use: Power
Macintosh, 68K Mac, Windows, or Windows NT operating systems. The enhanced
speed and power of the Power Macintosh will help us provide our customers
with applications that work together better and faster."

Upcoming Version of Office to Feature IntelliSense Technology

The upcoming version 4.0 of the award-winning Microsoft Office for both the
68K-based Macintosh and the Power Macintosh is scheduled to be available
this summer. It includes IntelliSense technology that senses what users
are trying to do and intelligently produces the desired result, and
OfficeLinks, a set of tools that enables unparalleled integration, and is
based on Object Linking and Embedding 2.0. The new versions of Word,
Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint will work together as one, freeing users to
focus on the tasks they want to accomplish, rather than the tools being
used.
