NEW LOCAL IBM 3270 TERMINAL EMULATION FOR NCD X TERMINALS EASES THE
MIGRATION FROM LEGACY TO OPEN SYSTEMS

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Mar. 23, 1994 -- Network Computing Devices has
brought the features and functionality of IBM 3270 terminals to the
advanced multi-window environment of its X terminals with a new 3270
terminal emulation software option. The integrated 3270 emulation eases
the migration from legacy to open systems by bringing access to mainframe
applications together with UNIX applications on the same desktop.

NCD's X terminal-based 3270 emulator displays one or more 3270 windows,
providing full interactive access to mainframe applications through
simple, pull-down menus; off-loading the emulation task from a server;
reducing network traffic; and even eliminating the need for a gateway for
network-attached mainframes with TCP/IP support and 3270 Telnet services.
The emulator is optionally included in NCDware X terminal software and
operates with all color and high-end-monochrome NCD X terminals.

The emulation software provides a seamless transition between open system
and mainframe applications. Users can flexibly "cut and paste" between
3270 and UNIX windows by line, input fields or rectangular region. A form
can be modified, for example, by borrowing an address line or an entire
section from another document that resides on a mainframe or a UNIX host.

Based on proven technology from Brixton Systems of Cambridge Mass., the new
NCD3270 software uses the industry-standard Telnet 3270 protocol over
TCP/IP to communicate as an IBM 3278 device.

"The 3270 emulator is an element of our focus on the commercial
'downsizing' market;" said Judy Estrin, NCD president and CEO. "A common
challenge to downsizing is how to incorporate the ease and simplicity of
graphical user interfaces and the advanced applications of open systems
into IBM 3270 computing environments. NCD X terminals provide a
cost-effective, field-proven solution in commercial mission-critical
applications at such companies as Federal Express and Barclays Bank. NCD's
software allows the user to preserve the substantial investment in
applications and data on IBM mainframes while enabling an easy transition
to open systems computing.

"Users are no longer satisfied with character-based terminals. They want a
graphical desktop with multiple windows, but still require 3270 emulation
software to access legacy applications. The X terminal desktop provides
the perfect hybrid for ease of administration with the added functionality
of accessing multiple applications within a graphical user environment on
a large screen," she said.

NCD offers an optional 3270 Lexmark keyboard priced at $150. In addition,
users who require other keyboard layouts that lack special 3270 keys can
take advantage of a mouse-activated onscreen 3270 PF function keypad.

The emulator also includes a graphical keymap editor which maps the full
range of 3270 functions to standard NCD keyboards. The operator or network
administrator can dynamically customize key layouts for an application,
user or site by simply dragging a key function and dropping it onto a new
key location. This is particularly helpful for CICS 3270 applications that
require specific function keys with a custom definition for each
application.

NCD 3270 emulation can be used to access applications on mainframes that
are directly connected to an Ethernet or Token Ring network with TCP/IP
and Telnet 3270 support. Alternatively, TCP/IP-to-SNA gateways can be used
to access SNA-attached mainframes.

Local IBM 3270 emulation software is available now as a licensed option
from NCD priced at $100 per terminal for multiple, simultaneous sessions.

Network Computing Devices, Inc., formed in February 1988, provides
information-access solutions for client-server computing environments. NCD
is the leading worldwide supplier of X Window System terminals, with a
broad family of color and monochrome units, and makes PC-X server software
products which integrate Microsoft Windows- and DOS-based PCs into X/UNIX
networks. The company's Z-Code division supplies the Z-Mail family of
cross-platform electronic-mail and messaging software for open-systems
environments.

NCD is publicly traded over the counter on the NASDAQ National Market
System under the symbol NCDI.
