New network pricing structure

March 1994 -- SilverPlatter is extremely pleased to announce a new network
pricing structure. We are very excited about this structure because it
allows us to provide pricing for usage levels which our customers have
been requesting, such as site licensing. And judging by the initial
response from our customers, we are confident that this new structure is
fair and equitable for both users and Information Providers.

Pricing based on simultaneous usage and media independence

This new pricing structure is based on simultaneous usage which we have
heard from customers is the preferred methodology for estimating usage.
The pricing structure has multiple pricing points that identify different
levels of usage. Our research indicates that, for the majority of our
databases, these are the most common levels of usage. Furthermore, the
structure is intended to be independent of media. So, for most
SilverPlatter databases, pricing is the same regardless of whether the
data is stored on CD-ROM or hard disk - it is all determined by level of
use.

The pricing points for the different levels of usage are outlined below. To
further help you understand our structure, definitions for these terms can
be found on the enclosed sheet, Glossary of Terms.

Pricing Points (applicable to most SilverPlatter databases)

* Single networked user
* Two to four simultaneous users
* Five to eight simultaneous users
* Nine to twelve simultaneous users
* Site License Remote access (dial-in): a fixed cost per database
that can be applied to any of the pricing points, with the
exception of site license, for which there is no additional
  fee.

Most SilverPlatter databases fall into this new structure easily. However,
there may be exceptions, depending upon the characteristics of a specific
database.

We have identified the first group of databases (listed on the attached
sheet) to which we will be applying this new structure. Customers who
currently have 2-8 multiuser subscriptions to any of the databases on this
list will now have a choice of either 2-4 or 5-8 usage level. Because of
the decision that these customers need to make, we will be following up
with pricing information for individual subscriptions as soon as
possible.

As we finalize pricing details with Information Providers for our other
databases, we will announce on a quarterly basis, or sooner, those
databases as they move into the new pricing structure. Customers who have
multiuser subscriptions to any database that moves into the new structure
will receive complete details on pricing changes for those particular
databases immediately.

We are committed to keeping all of our users fully informed about our new
pricing structure. All customers will receive further information from us
via letters, our Newsletter, and our Internet communications.

SilverPlatter hopes that you will find this new structure not only fair and
equitable, but also easy to understand and easy to budget. We feel that
the flexibility of this new structure can and will continue to accommodate
your electronic information needs as they evolve.

If you have any questions about our new pricing structure, please do not
hesitate to contact your SilverPlatter representative or your local
distributor.

SilverPlatter Glossary of Terms For Network Pricing

Site: Same bill-to address, same institution, same city.

Example: The Metropolitan University, in any city, any country, has a
single campus which houses three libraries: the Science Library, the
Medical Library and the Psychology Library. This would be considered one
site.

If the Metropolitan University has three campuses in three different
cities, Metropolitan University would not be considered one site.

Simultaneous Users: The number of users 'inside' or past the title screen.
It is NOT defined by CPU access time or by the number of users pressing
'enter' simultaneously.

Example: The Medical Library has a MEDLINE subscription for 2-4
simultaneous users. At the same time, one searcher could be browsing the
Index, another could be reviewing search results, another could be
entering a search statement, and another could be consulting with a
colleague about Thesaurus terms displayed on the screen. This represents
four simultaneous users accessing MEDLINE.

Single Networked User: A database that is on a network but limited to one
user inside the title screen at any given time.

Example: The Medical Library has a subscription to MEDLINE which is mounted
on its network, but has limited access to one person using it at a time.

Dial In or Remote Access: Users who are normally resident at the
institution, but who may be dialing in from their home, office or on the
road.

Example: A professor in the Psychology Department can dial in to the
Psychology Library's PsycLIT database from home or while on sabbatical
provided the Professor is considered a normal resident of the university.

Media independence: Emphasis is on data and its usage rather than on
storage medium.

Example: Two different libraries each have a 5-8 simultaneous user
subscription to MEDLINE. One library has MEDLINE loaded onto CD-ROM; the
other library has MEDLINE on hard disk. The same pricing applies to both
subscriptions.
