PowerMon and Total Network Recall -- A Powerful Team!

If you are looking for the closest thing to total data protection, look no
further. When Systems Enhancement Corporation released Total Network
Recall, backup and restore software for Novell, a very powerful bond was
established with PowerMon, SEC's UPS monitoring and shutdown software.

Network backup and UPS monitoring operations can now work in conjunction
with each other. For example, it's 2 a.m., there are no employees in your
facility and lightning strikes your transformer, cutting the utility
power. Naturally, your UPS kicks in and PowerMon begins broadcasting
messages and counting down until shutdown. Suppose you had a network
backup taking place at the time the power disturbance occurred. What
happens?

Most likely the backup will continue as long as the UPS has enough power to
support the server and the tape drive at the same time. If power is not
restored the UPS will continue until the batteries reach a low state, at
which point the UPS will shut itself off. Power will be lost to the server
and tape drive. Aside from the obvious corruption of the tape backup, data
in the server could also be lost due to an improper system shutdown.

However, combine the interaction of Total Network Recall with PowerMon, and
backup operations can be independently managed while the server is on
battery backup, putting your worries to rest. How does it work? PowerMon
detects an AC power fail message from the UPS, interprets the information,
and then communicates with Total Network Recall to stop any currently
running network backup. After TNR has been properly stopped, PowerMon will
continue to properly shut down the operating system, ensuring total data
protection. Also, any operations in the backup queue are placed on hold.

Another notable feature is that Total Network Recall can be configured to
backup mission critical files in the event of a power failure. This is a
backup set that can be activated by a power fail condition to back up only
files that are critical to the server itself, such as bindery files or
directory services.

"We believe this is a tremendous breakthrough in the data protection
industry," said Ken Barry, Technical Manager for SEC. "We know that
Systems Enhancement is the only company to currently offer this advanced
data protection feature."

Current SEC customers can install Total Network Recall with their existing
copy of PowerMon software running on a Novell server. The software has
also been developed to work with Novell PowerMon OEM software as well,
including SmartMon products. Total Network Recall is available in three
different versions: 1-20 user, 1-50 user, and 1-1000 user; and is a
NetWare Loadable Module (NLM). Contact SEC for additional information or
pricing.
