O'REILLY ANNOUNCES WINNER OF 'BEST NEW SMILEY CONTEST'

March 18, 1994 -- SEBASTOPOL, CA -- O'Reilly & Associates, the people who
put an armadillo on the cover of a system administration book, announced
that Pete "Ender" Walsh of Falls Church, VA has been named the winner of
the $500 prize for the best submission to "The Best New Smiley Contest."
His winning entry is:

         >[:^)

  "Watches too much TV"

The contest was judged by David Sanderson, compiler of SMILEYS, a
collection of 650 smiley faces published by O'Reilly & Associates (ISBN:
1-56592-041-4; $5.95 US), and Lesley Strother, a designer at O'Reilly.
People submitting the best smiley not already found in SMILEYS by October
1, 1993 were eligible for the $500 prize.

Originally inserted into email messages to denote "said with a cynical
smile" :-) smileys now run rampant throughout the electronic mail culture.
These electronic smileys (or "emoticons" as they are sometimes called by
people with no sense of humor) are sideways expressions of basic emotions
that color and clarify electronic mail.

In addition to naming a winner, O'Reilly will give the 20 runners up copies
of the new edition of Ed Krol's The Whole Internet User's Guide & Catalog,
to be released April 1. The runners up entries are:
