FIRST BATTERY POWERED WIRELESS ETHERNET ADAPTER GIVES USERS PLUG-AND-PLAY
MOBILITY

Solectek's AIRLAN/Parallel is Ideal for Connecting Portable Computers

SAN DIEGO, March 28, 1994 -- Solectek Corp. today introduced
AIRLAN/Parallel, the first battery powered wireless Ethernet adapter which
attaches externally to any parallel port, making possible untethered
mobile local area network connections, and providing seamless
compatibility between wired and wireless networks. AIRLAN/Parallel is
compact, only 7.5 x 2.5 inches, and attaches easily with a removable clip
to the back of any notebook computer screen.

AIRLAN/Parallel features enclosed rechargeable batteries for mobile
operation up to 10 hours without draining any power from the notebook
computer. Users can maintain a network link while conducting meetings in
remote conference rooms or offices, or while roaming within a building.
AIRLAN has an operating range up to 800 feet in an open environment, or
50,000 square feet in a typical office environment, and can be used with
Solectek's AIRLAN/Hub wireless access point for extended campus-wide
connections.

Unlike other network adapters which often require special expertise to
connect, installing Solectek's AlRLAN/Parallel wireless adapter is easy:
simply plug the external adapter into any parallel port and then follow
the clear menu of instructions to configure the computer to the network.
Once connected, operation is completely transparent to the user. All the
services of an existing network are available to the AIRLAN equipped
computer, no matter where it is located within its operating range.

This quick and easy installation makes the AIRLAN adapter ideal for
expanding existing networks as well as for creating mobile or remote site
connections. AIRLAN can also be used for temporary setups or traveling
LANs.

"The benefits of networking are clear," said James DeBello, president and
chief executive officer for Solectek. "But if you're like most notebook
users, you need the freedom to move about the workplace, unencumbered by
power cords and network cables. We've eliminated these frustrations with
AIRLAN's wireless plug-and-play technology. Now users can instantly link
to the LAN and stay connected even while moving within the building."

Another advantage of AIRLAN/Parallel is its proven ability to provide
uninterrupted networking connections when power is lost, or even (as
occurred recently in California) when a major disaster disables
cable-linked LANs.

Ease of Installation Is Prime Design Consideration

Solectek paid particular attention to features which make AIRLAN/Parallel
easy to install and operate. First, its integrated 9 inch cable plugs in
to any parallel printer port, including unidirectional, bidirectional, and
high-speed Enhanced Parallel Ports. A two foot extension cable is included
for use with desktop computers.

Second, the installation software automatically senses the type of parallel
port to which it is connected and uses a simple menu of instructions to
guide users through the network configuration process

Third, AIRLAN/Parallel features enclosed rechargeable batteries for
untethered mobile operation up to 10 hours. AIRLAN can also be operated by
using an optional AC adapter which is included for desktop or portable
use. The AC adapter is also used to recharge AIRLAN.

Lastly, AIRLAN has LED indicators which indicate data transmission, low
battery and link quality. AIRLAN automatically tests the quality of the
link, showing a green light when the connection is strong; if the LED is
not lit, users simply reposition the integrated unit until the light comes
on.

Compatible with Ethernet Standards

AIRLAN/Parallel complies with the most pervasive networking standards, IEEE
802.3, and is compatible with the many host-based and peer-to-peer network
operating systems, including Novell NetWare, NetWare Lite, Microsoft LAN
Manager and Windows for Workgroups, Artisoft LANtastic, and other ODI/NDIS
operating systems.

In addition to extending existing wired networks, AIRLAN is also compatible
with all DEC and NCR WaveLAN products, and can be integrated into existing
wireless networks using these products.

Proven RF Technology Featured in All AIRLANProducts

AIRLAN/Parallel is the newest member of Solectek's family of wireless
Ethernet solutions which feature spread spectrum radio technology.
Originally deployed by the military for secure field communications,
spread spectrum technology differs from other wireless technologies in
that it can penetrate walls, ceilings and floors with the same security as
wired networks at speeds of two megabits per second.

Pricing and Availability

AIRLAN/Parallel's suggested retail price of $699 includes the adapter,
installation software, and optional power supply with a 2 ft. extension
cable for desktop use. Scheduled to ship in May, 1994, AIRLAN will premier
at the NetWorld/Interop trade show in Las Vegas beginning May 2, and will
be available from leading distributors and network integrators worldwide.
