March 15,1994 (San Francisco, CA) - The Software Publishers Association
(SPA) yesterday presented awards recognizing three journalists for their
outstanding work. The awards were presented at the annual SPA "Codie"
Awards ceremony to honor those individuals who cover the PC software
industry in an accurate and insightful manner. Journalists honored
included:

* Walter S. Mossberg, The Wall Street Journal,
  Best Software Reviewer and Best Trade or General Press
  News Reporting;
* Robin Raskin, PC Magazine,
  Best Industry Analyst/Editorial;

nominate and select the recipients. Past winners have included such
well-known journalists as Keith Ferrell, Peter Lewis, Johnny Wilson, Jeff
Tarter, Lonnie Brown, Larry Magid, Michael Rodgers, Stewart Alsop, and
Michael Miller.

Walter S. Mossberg, Columnist for The Wall Street Journal, was recognized
as Best Software Reviewer, a category that honors the writer who most
consistently presents accurate, fair and thorough representations of
software products in their reviews published in industry or non-industry
publications. Mossberg's weekly column puts new computer products and
services into terms that are meaningful for the business community. His
reviews explain how the computer can empower and give worthwhile benefits
to the user.

Mossberg also received a second Journalism Recognition Award in the
category of Best Trade or General Press News Reporting. This category
honors the journalist who best covers the industry's important issues in a
timely and objective manner in an industry trade publication or in a
general business or technology column of a non-industry publication.
Mossberg's "Personal Technology" column covers technology for personal use
as well as the personal or human side of using business technology or
products.

Another Journalism Recognition Award was presented for Best Industry
Analyst/Editorial, which honors the person who most consistently presents
insightful and articulate reflections of the software industry's evolution
in either editorial or industry trend analysis columns for the trade or
general press. For the second year in a row, the journalist recognized in
this category was Robin Raskin, Editor of PC Magazine. Raskin is
responsible for the day-to-day editorial direction of the magazine and
manages the editorial department. She also writes "Pipeline," a regular
commentary on industry trends.

The final award is bestowed for the Best Financial Reporting and Analysis
and honors the person who best covers the business and financial aspects
of the industry, including financial reporting, stock market or industry
trend analysis.

Richard Shaffer, Editor of ComputerLetter, was the recipient. Shaffer's
Personal Technology newsletter goes into strategic financial issues of
computer companies and gives in-depth background and analyses of key
companies and industry trends.
