SPA Announces IBM Recipient of 1994 Community Service Citation

Two Companies Receive Honorable Mentions:
Miller Freeman, Inc. and Parsons Technology

March 15, 1994 (San Francisco, CA) - The Software Publishers Association
(SPA) today honored IBM Corp. for its efforts on behalf of missing and
exploited children. SPA recognized IBM as part of its second annual
Community Service Citation.

The goal of the IBM program is to promote the application of advanced
technology in the investigative process for recovering missing children.
To support this, IBM joined with the National Center for Missing and
Exploited Children (NCMEC) in developing an interactive kiosk program
called "Have You Seen Me? Network." Combining video, sound and printed
information the kiosk features a continuous rotation of photos of missing
children--many of them computer-enhanced to show age progression--and
details about the cases. To date the kiosks have been installed in two
locations: Washington DC's National Airport and during the COMDEX computer
show in Las Vegas. The National Airport kiosk is linked electronically to
NCMEC and can be updated almost instantly with new information, an
important capability in an effort where time is critical.

Ken Wasch, SPA Executive Director said, "IBM's work represents the very
best in community service by the software industry. Not only have they
been an effective advocate for missing and exploited children, but they
have used multimedia technology to solve one of our country's most
difficult and heartwrenching problems."

"Technology for technology's sake is uninteresting and unacceptable," said
James A. Cannavino, IBM senior vice president, strategy and development.
"Using technology to solve real problems is the key. I can't think of a
more important use of IBM's multimedia and OS/2 technology than helping
the center bring families back together."

The SPA Community Service Citation recognizes software companies'
outstanding contributions to community outreach around the country. In its
second year, there were nine nominees. Two Honorable Mentions were also
presented. They were:

* Miller Freeman, Inc.--Community Connection
* Parsons Technology--1993 Year in Review

The Community Service Citation was presented in conjunction with the SPA's
Excellence in Software Awards in San Francisco on March 14, 1994, at the
SPA's Annual Spring Symposium.
