SPA Announces "Codies" Award Winners

Annual Excellence in Software Awards Presented at SPA Conference

March 15, 1994 (San Francisco, CA) - High tech went Hollywood again last
night at the 1994 Software Publishers Association (SPA) Excellence in
Software Awards, the "Oscars" of the software industry.

The SPA, the primary trade association of the personal computer software
industry, handed out its highly coveted "Codie" Awards for the best
consumer, education, and business software of 1993. SPA members voted for
the winners in 25 categories from a total of 509 nominations.

"The level of entries in the 1994 Codie Awards certainly bodes well for the
software industry and for the nation as a whole," says Ken Wasch,
executive director of the SPA. "The innovation, intelligence and sheer
imagination demonstrated in the Codie-winning products is simply
astonishing. These programs all enhance the way we work, live and learn."

Two products were winners in multiple categories, including Myst by
Br0derbund Software, Inc. (Best Fantasy Role Playing/Adventure Program and
Best User Interface in a New Program) and Quicken 3.0 for Windows by
Intuit (Best Consumer Program and Best Personal Productivity Program).

In addition, four companies received honors for multiple products,
including Adobe Systems, Inc. for Adobe Photoshop 2.5 for Windows (Best
New Business Application: Graphic or Display) and Adobe Acrobat (Best New
Use of a Computer); Edmark Corporation, for Thinkin' Things (Best Early
Education Program) and KidDesk Family Edition (Best Educational Tool
Program); Maxis for SimCity 2000 (Best Simulation Program) and SimFarm
(Best Secondary Education Program); and Microsoft Corporation for
Microsoft Word 6.0 for Windows (Best Business Application: Word or Text),
Microsoft Excel 5.0 for Windows (Best Business Application: Numeric or
Data) and Microsoft Encarta Multimedia Encyclopedia 1994 (Best Home
Learning Program).

Critics' Choice Awards, selected by members of the media, were presented
for Best Business Program, Best Consumer Program, and Best Education
Program. Filemaker Pro 2.1 by Claris Corporation won the Critics' Choice
Award for Best Business Program. Myst by Br0derbund Software, Inc. won the
Critics' Choice Award for Best Consumer Program. Davidson's Kid CAD by
Davidson & Associates, Inc. captured the Critics' Choice Award for Best

Comedian Larry Miller presided over the black-tie ceremony attended by over
1100 software industry executives. The evening was a highlight of the
SPA's Annual Spring Symposium, held in San Francisco. Miller regaled the
crowd with a variety of jokes, often spoofing the software industry.

The Software Publishers Association is the principal trade association of
the PC software industry. The SPA comprises more than 1,000 members
worldwide including business, consumer, and education software firms. The
SPA has offices in Washington DC, and Paris, France.
