Technology for Education Bill in Senate

Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy has introduced a bill in the Senate, The
Technology for Education Act, designed to make technology more available
to schools around the country. This bipartisan bill is cosponsored by
Senator Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico and Senator Thad Cochran of
Mississippi.

The bill would provide grants and low-interest loans for schools to
purchase new hardware and software, to fund teacher training and technical
assistance, to help states develop technology plans, and to create a new
educational technology office within the U.S. Department of Education.

Kennedy addressed the need for improving technology during a recent forum
at West Roxbury High School in Boston, which was attended by Deputy
Secretary of Education Madeleine Kunin. During his visit Senator Kennedy
met with Tom Snyder Productions President, Rick Abrams, and Director of
Research, Cecelia Lenk, and saw a demonstration of The Great Ocean Rescue,
a program partially funded through the Star Schools program which Kennedy
supported.

In a speech to educators a the forum Kennedy said, "Technology in the
classroom is not a luxury. It's central to the future of American
education and the American economy, and to prepare students for the modern
workplace."
