Weitek Ships POWER 9100 Graphics Controller

Single-Chip Controller Provides 64-bit Graphics Performance

SUNNYVALE, CALIF.--March 7, 1994--Weitek Corporation announced that it is
shipping its POWER 9100 graphics controller chip in production quantities.
The POWER 9100 is a fully-integrated graphics accelerator which provides
64-bit VRAM bandwidth and integrated local bus interfaces to deliver the
highest level of PC graphics performance at reduced system costs.

"Diamond is now sampling the VIPER PRO which uses the POWER 9100. The VIPER
PRO brings workstation graphics performance to the PC, offering higher
performance and more features than today's VIPER, which uses the POWER
9000," commented Joe O'Neill, executive vice president of Diamond Computer
Systems, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA. "The 9100 has a unique distinguishing
feature in that it can be coupled with Weitek's Video POWER coprocessor to
add TV-quality video playback to the graphics subsystem."

The POWER 9100 incorporates workstation-class interleaved architecture
originally developed for Weitek's line of workstation processors. The
POWER 9100 is the first controller to run fully-accelerated 24-bit true
color at screen resolutions as high as 1280 x 1024 in only 4 MBytes of
memory. The device integrates SVGA, VESA VL and Intel PCI local bus
circuitry, eliminating the need for discrete logic implementations.

"POWER 9100 is the deserving successor to Weitek's POWER 9000," said Bob
Butchko, Weitek's director of marketing. "The 9100, with its sophisticated
architecture, provides 64-bit data rates with two 32-bit banks of
interleaved memory. Couple this with the fact that competing devices
require more expensive packages and additional glue logic to work with the
local bus, and you have superior, workstation-comparable graphics
performance at a very competitive price."

The POWER 9100 is designed with a coprocessor interface to support
companion devices for specialized performance-intensive applications using
a shared frame buffer architecture. The first of these coprocessors, the
Video POWER, will be available in late March 1994.

The POWER 9100 is priced at $70 per unit in production quantities. It is
available immediately.
