Just a few quick random newsbits from assorted sources....

Living Books, a joint venture of Broderbund Software Inc. and Random House
Inc., has purchased the multimedia rights to the classic children's books
of Dr. Seuss, among the most pursued in the publishing and computer
industries. The final contracts were signed in April by Living Books and
Audrey Geisel, the widow of the author, Theodor S. Geisel. Mrs. Geisel
represented Dr. Seuss Enterprises L.P., which owned the rights. The terms
of the deal were not disclosed, but more than 200 million copies of the 48
Dr. Seuss titles have been sold.

Battery maker AER Energy Resources Inc of Atlanta, GA and PC developer
Zenith Data Systems are teaming up to create a long-run-time version of
AER Energy's rechargeable zinc-air battery system. It promises from two to
four times the energy density by weight of nickel-cadmium and
nickel-metal-hydride cells. Depending on the user's work patter and the
computer's configuration and power requirements, AER Energy claims that
their system can power a notebook PC for 10 to 20 hours on a single
charge.

The Digital Data Storage Manufacturers Group recently announced an
enhancement to its format-migration path for digital-audio-tape (DAT)
storage. The enhancement supplies a 50% capacity increase over current
(DDS-3) specifications, which will take the capacity to 12 Gbytes in the
native mode and to 24 Gbytes with compression. The DDS-3 format specified
8 Gbytes on a 120-m tape; the 12-Gbyte specification employs 125-m tape.
The follow-on specification (DDS-4), which should spawn products by 1997,
pushes the capacity to 24 Gbytes. Products based on the DDS-3
specification should become available in the second half of the year.
