Amazing CADMAX TrueSurf Master: 3D NURBS Surface Modeling for the Designer

(Baltimore, Maryland -- May 1, 1994) CADMAX Corporation has aggressively
stepped up its pace of innovation with the introduction of CADMAX TrueSurf
Master, giving engineers and designers 95% of the design capabilities
found in workstation products at 20% of the cost. Normally CAD vendors add
NURBS (non-uniform rational b-splines) surfaces to their products
primarily to enable manufacturing productivity. TrueSurf Master
establishes a new standard by being the first high-end 3D PC CAD program
to utilize NURBS surfaces as an enabling technology to dramatically
improve 3D design productivity as well as manufacturing productivity.
CADMAX accomplishes this by integrating NURBS surfaces with CADMAX
TrueSurf's unique Hidden Line Design. Hidden Line Design permits the use
of a single database for the model and detail drawings, which reduces
design errors and enhances productivity by eliminating 2D takeoffs of each
design.

CADMAX has garnered an elite following of mechanical designers that are
committed to its unique approach to 3D design, called Hidden Line Design.
Unlike any other CAD program on a DOS platform, CADMAX gives the designer
hidden line and shaded views to edit, rather than ambiguous 3D wireframe
views. This new approach to 3D enables the designer to produce the
finished product faster and with fewer errors than the traditional 3D
wireframe approach. The users who have adopted Hidden Line Design are the
vanguard of a much-needed fresh approach to 3D CAD.

TrueSurf Master: A New Level of Design Productivity

Coupling the NURBS surfaces in TrueSurf Master with Hidden Line Design
enables the designer to create precise geometry that accurately expresses
any three dimensional shape. Hidden Line Design presents a clear
presentation of the model that the designer can interactively edit. With a
hidden line model, design errors are spotted instantly, preventing costly
errors during manufacturing. Interference between parts will easily be
seen, helping to avoid rework and revisions during later stages of
engineering.

The 3D model and detail drawings are fully integrated providing complete
associativity between design and manufacturing drawings. A change in one
changes the other automatically. There is no longer a need for time
consuming 2D take-offs of the 3D model.

Editing and geometry creation are faster. Models created with NURBS
surfaces frequently require less geometry. Complex shapes that previously
would have required hundreds of elements can be expressed with only a few.
The designer spends more time working with content rather than context
because the interactive hidden line views enable him to focus on creating
the model rather than managing the software to create a wireframe
representation. Hidden line pictures let the designer easily identify
geometry to edit or construct, a process that is error prone with
ambiguous wireframe pictures.

TrueSurf Master: Features Overview

CADMAX TrueSurf Master includes a variety of new tools for constructing and
editing NURBS surfaces. The initial release includes extruded surfaces,
swept surfaces, surfaces of rotation, translation surfaces, fillet
surfaces and surfaces created from a family of curves. The surface
intersection feature automatically creates the intersecting geometry
between any two surfaces and can trim them to the intersection. Surfaces
can be trimmed and have holes. TrueSurf Master supports non-uniform
scaling of surfaces and the ability to interactively stretch surfaces.
Surfaces can be viewed with flow lines using a user defined mesh size and
as interactive hidden line or shaded views.

Product Information

CADMAX TrueSurf Master and other CADMAX products are sold directly to
endusers and through an international network of authorized dealers and

BACKGROUND

CADMAX Introduces Fully Associative One Step Design to Production Drawings

CADMAX Corporation has garnered an elite following of mechanical designers
that are committed to its unique approach to 3D design, called Hidden Line
Design. Unlike any other CAD program on a DOS platform, the designer
always edits hidden line and shaded views, rather than ambiguous 3D
wireframe views. This lets you really see the part. The views produced by
Hidden Line Design contain all the necessary geometry for detailing. This
permits the use of a single NURBS database for the model and drawings,
which reduces design errors and enhances productivity by eliminating 2D
takeoffs of each design. The users that have adopted Hidden Line Design
are the vanguard of a much needed, fresh approach to 3D CAD.

According to Louis Wohlmuth, President of CADMAX Corporation, "CADMAX
TrueSurf and the soon to be introduced CADMAX TrueSurf Master are the
first 3D CAD products in the world on any hardware platform to offer
Hidden Line Design without solid modeling. While a wide variety of CAD
packages do offer 3D design, none offer full associativity between the
model and detail drawings."

Integrated Product Design

CADMAX TrueSurf offers interactive hidden line and shaded viewing which
eliminates one of the greatest barriers to wider application of 3D CAD --
the difficulty of visually perceiving and editing an ambiguous wireframe
model on a flat computer screen. Using conventional wireframe display
technology, even simple designs contain so many lines that it becomes
tedious and time consuming to edit the 3D model.

Hidden Line Design provides full associativity between the design, assembly
and manufacturing drawings because they are based upon a single database.
A change in one changes the other automatically, eliminating the need for
2D take-offs of the 3D wireframe model. This enables the design to be
completed faster. Modifications made to the model at a later date are
automatically reflected in the production drawings, ensuring model
integrity throughout the design process.

CADMAX has the following features for creating a fully integrated product
design:

* Integrated wireframe/hidden line/shaded/surface modeling
  provides flexibility in design approach.
* Fully associative model and detail drawings: change one and
  the other changes.
* Fully precise, double precision NURBS geometry and surfaces.
* Full featured robust operation.
* Surface integrity checking ensures the model is correct.
* Automatic production of horizon lines and intersections
  to produce accurate detail.

3D As Easy As 2D

CADMAX provides unparalleled user productivity by combining an exceptional
user interface with the most advanced construction and editing features
available in any PC-based CAD program. The secret to CADMAX's
user-interface is its exclusive two-level menu structure. Commands that
require many steps to complete in other CAD programs only require two
steps in CADMAX. This means less button pushing for the designer, allowing
the user to concentrate more on the design instead of on operating the
software. Simple, user interaction concepts, based on context sensitive
prompts, are applied consistently throughout the software. As a result.
the beginner quickly learns to use CADMAX and can easily explore advanced
features using already familiar concepts.

Hidden Line Design alone enhances editing and construction because the
designer has a clear understanding of the model. Coupling Hidden Line
Design with CADMAX's robust set of editing and construction features
creates a highly productive design environment. CADMAX has the following
advanced features for editing and construction:

* 3D Dynamics for superior viewing performance.
* Extensive command echoes show the results before committing
  to them.
* Input in any 3D view at any time without restriction.
* Interactive hidden line and shaded viewing.
* A variety of facilities to control geometry orientation
  and depth.
* Support of a wide variety of 3D elements including NURBS
  geometry elements.
* Freely convert geometry from 2D to 3D and back.
* Numerous features for constructing complex geometry from
  basic shapes.
* A local coordinate system tor simplified geometry entry.
