Folio Sets the Standard for Commercial Electronic Publishing with
Introduction of Folio VIEWS 3.1 Product Family

New Tools for CD ROM and Diskette-based Publishing Help Folio Maintain Lead
As Commercial Publishers' "Platform of Choice"

May 23, 1994, Provo, Utah--Folio Corporation's new Folio VIEWS 3.1 Product
Family will help commercial publishers create and market more competitive
CD ROM and diskette-based publications. Folio's Infobase Distribution and
Management Tools, included in the Folio VIEWS 3.1 Professional Infobase
Development Kit (PIDK), give commercial publishers unprecedented
capabilities for creating, maintaining, distributing and controlling the
titles they produce, and will help Folio extend its leadership as a de
facto standard platform for commercial publishing. As a result, the number
of publishers producing Folio Infobases will increase dramatically, as
will the number of titles which are commercially available.

Significant new features for commercial publishers include Rights
Management, giving publishers vital control over user access to published
titles; Query Templates, a new way to design custom search screens that
make it very easy for users to search an infobase; and Folio Bound VIEWS 3
.1 Infobase Manager, a fully functional, distributable version of VIEWS
that gives end users the full set of VIEWS functionality, but which will
only work with infobases that are similarly "bound." (See related Folio
Corp. announcement for details on specific features.)

"Our eight years of close work with commercial publishers has taught us a
lot about what they need to be successful," said Henry Heilesen, Folio's
vice president-Publishing. "Publisher requests account for most of the
features we have developed in our product line and are a major reason we
currently enjoy relationships with more than 200 commercial publishing
companies."

Commercial Publishers Praise Latest Generation Of Folio Infobase
Technology

Beta testers of the Folio VIEWS 3.1 Product Family praised its key
technical capabilities.

"Folio VIEWS 2.x met a real market need, but customers are now more
sophisticated and can take advantage of more powerful tools. The Folio
VIEWS 3 .1 Product Family really lets us reach a larger audience with more
and better products," said Sigrid Metson, vice president of Electronic
Products for Bancroft-Whitney in San Francisco. "We are shooting to roll
out nine titles in September for all three operating environments (DOS,
Windows and Macintosh). In fact, our customer testers are so enthusiastic
about the new features of VIEWS 3.1 Infobase Manager, they are asking us
to accelerate market release. "

"Rights management is essential. It opens a whole new way of doing business
for us," said Joanne Pippin, manager of Electronic Products for the Bureau
of National Affairs in Washington, D.C. "Today in our print subscription
we send 30 volumes of material to customers that includes all the
environmental regulatory information for both Federal and State
governments. Many customers only want the Federal information and a couple
of States, but we have to send all 30 volumes because paper makes it too
difficult to customize the subscription for each user. Folio's Rights
Management allows us to include an entire product on the CD ROM, but only
sell what the user wants. This allows the user to pick and choose the
products they want and it gives us the flexibility to price accordingly."

Other Publishing Solutions Still Fail To Match Previous Folio Milestones

Folio Infobase Technology has achieved several milestones that are still
unmatched by other solutions. Folio's key technical advantages for
commercial publishers include 1) Indexed Content and Document structure
(full-text searching, tables of contents, fields), 2) Underhead Technology
(compression), 3) Dynamic File System (for real-time production work and
updating), 4) Robust Publishing Tools (ProPublish, Flat File Validator,
Folio Bound VIEWS 3.1 Infobase Manager), 5) End User Information
Adaptability (robust annotations, personalizations), and 6) Infobase
Distribution and Management Tools (Rights Management, Shadow File
Reconcilliation).

Folio provides the only technology that lets publishers give users complete
freedom to adapt (annotate and fully personalize) the information they
publish. Folio's dynamic infobase file structure allows changes to be made
and indexed on-the-fly with as many as 125 users simultaneously adding or
changing information in the same infobase over a network. Publishers may
choose to restrict any or all rights to change the information being
published, but where needed, publishers can allow users to personalize the
information to whatever degree is necessary.

"Folio VIEWS 3.1 Infobase Manager not only helps the researcher find
information, but once found, gives users elegant tools to capture and use
portions of it in the creation of new documents," said Metson. "This is
crucial to legal researchers who have to navigate through vast quantities
of data, then cite it in briefs and other documents. We think that the
added power of VIEWS 3 .1 Infobase Manager will give our information a new
dimension of relevance and usefulness to our customers."

"Notes and highlighters are excellent selling points for our products,"
said Pippin. "We sell based on the customization features."

Said Heilesen, "It's not enough to give publishers the ability to create
great looking published titles, or even titles that are easy to search.
Users want to be able to adapt information to meet their own unique needs.
And since no publisher can anticipate all of their users' needs, the only
alternative is to use Folio software and let the users decide what they
really want to do with the information to apply it to the needs of their
business. "
