Holiday Inn Worldwide Ports New Reservation System to Apple Power
Macintosh

CUPERTINO, California--April 11, 1994--Utilizing Apple's latest technology
to gain significant competitive advantages, Holiday Inn Worldwide is
deploying its new Holiday Inn Expert Reservation Manager (HERMAN) system
on Apple Power Macintosh computers. HERMAN has been ported to over 100
Power Macintosh 7100/66 systems to take advantage of the platform's
superior computing power and speed, helping reservation agents handle
incoming calls more efficiently with reservation information appearing
on-screen as guests ask questions. The system was deployed first at
Holiday Inn's central reservation office in Amsterdam which handles all
reservations for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Eventually, the
HERMAN system will be ported to Power Macintosh systems installed at all
Holiday Inn reservation centers worldwide.

"Not only does HERMAN enhance our current operations, but more importantly,
the deployment of HERMAN on the Power Macintosh platform gives us
tremendous speed improvements at a very attractive price," said Steve
Jacobs, senior vice president, reservations and guest relations for
Holiday Inn Worldwide. "Power Macintosh is more than a stand alone
investment for us; its horsepower allows us to test the more advanced
features of our reservation system without slowing down operations, and
its cross-platform compatibility makes it possible for us to combine front
desk and in-room applications with our reservations computers."

Recognized as the most innovative and easy-to-use reservation system in the
hotel industry, HERMAN was developed specifically for the Macintosh
platform and was first installed on Macintosh Quadra650 computers in June
1993. With HERMAN, agents can handle more reservations in less time,
lowering the cost per reservation. Agents no longer have to memorize the
more than 12,000 three-, four- or five-letter command codes used across
the industry to sell a room. Instead, with Power Macintosh, they simply
point to an icon and the information (such as location, rate and amenities
of hotels) appears on screen. With this improved efficiency, agents can
focus on servicing the needs of potential guests rather than on operating
the computer.

Holiday Inn expects HERMAN running on the Power Macintosh to improve
performance throughout the company by reducing call handling and agent
training time, increasing reservations and incremental revenue, enhancing
the agents' work environment, and improving customer service. The company
also expects to decrease the operation charges, time, and costs associated
with changes to the reservation system.

Introduced on March 14, 1994, Power Macintosh is Apple's line of new
RISC-based personal computers powered by the Motorola PowerPC 601
microprocessor which was jointly developed by Apple, IBM and Motorola.
The three new Power Macintosh models (Power Macintosh 6100/60, 7100/66 and
8100/80) offer the power of workstation computers, the affordability of
mainstream personal computers and the capability to run applications for
Macintosh, MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows.

Holiday Inn Worldwide operates a total of 14 central reservation offices
worldwide. Together, they handle more than 23 million calls per year and
provide between 30 and 40 percent of a franchised hotel's occupancy. With
twice the call volume and gross revenue productivity than that of any
other single brand, Holiday Inn Worldwide is the recognized leader in
reservation processing. Holiday Inn Worldwide, which is owned by Bass PLC
of the U.K., operates more than 1,800 hotels and 340,000 guest rooms in
more than 50 countries.

Holiday Inn Expert Reservation Manager (HERMAN) on Apple Power Macintosh

Description: Holiday Inn Expert Reservation Manager (HERMAN) is the first
hotel reservation system to combine the Macintosh graphical user interface
with client-server technology to create a streamlined, easy-to-use system
of reservation processing.

History: In April 1994, HERMAN was ported to the Power Macintosh platform
and tested on 100 systems at Holiday Inn's Central Reservation Office in
Amsterdam, the Netherlands. HERMAN was first deployed on Macintosh Quadra
650 computers and introduced to the Holiday Inn Worldwide reservation
system in June 1993. The development of HERMAN was a collaborative effort
by reservations sales agents, hoteliers, and guests =D0esigned by the
end-user for the end-user.

Volume: 1,800 Reservation Sales Agents use 765 Macintosh computers that
will log approximately 23 million calls using HERMAN throughout the
calendar year. Call handling time with HERMAN has already been reduced
approximately 10-20 seconds per call.

Technical Information: The Apple Power Macintosh 7100/66 is used as the
client system. An easy-to-use graphical front-end seamlessly links
customer service sites in Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Raleigh and Amsterdam.
Apple's MacApp C++ development environment retrieves information locally
from a Sybase database server and remotely from the Holidex system using
MitemView.
