InfraLAN Introduces New Wireless Ethernet System

New System Uses Infrared Technology for Intra-Building Wireless LAN
Connectivity

ACTON, MA, May 3, 1994 -- Laser Communications, Inc., an affiliate of
Safeguard Scientifics (NYSE:SFE), announced the availability of the
InfraLAN Wireless Ethernet System. The new product was developed by
InfraLAN Technologies, Inc., which was recently acquired by LCI, and
provides a wireless alternative for the intra-building local area network
(LAN) connectivity of Ethernet configurations.

Fully compliant with the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standard, the InfraLAN
Wireless Ethernet System is a private, cost-effective network using
infrared transmissions in line-of-sight applications, with an optical
range of up to 90 feet and an optical wavelength of 870 nanometers.
InfraLAN Ethernet System can be used either as a standalone network or
connected to an existing backbone; installation does not involve changes
to standard network adaptor cards or software drivers and the infrared
technology requires no special licensing. This versatile device can
accommodate input from either an AUI or 10 Base-T source.

Working with low power consumption (12 volts DC input voltage, 800 mA DC
input current), it provides maximum available data throughput of 10 Mbps
with collision detection, with bit error rates equal or superior to cable.
The infrared technology, which is the same technology used in television
and VCR remote controls, is not disrupted by electromagnetic interference
and will not disrupt other electronic devices.

The InfraLAN Wireless Ethernet System is ideal for use in open office
environments, factories, retail floors, disaster recovery applications and
any internal locale where frequent network rearrangement is anticipated.
The system's optical nodes can be mounted on walls, partitions or floor
stands, and its compact size allows direct attachment to the AUI connector
on most devices.

"This new product expands the applications possible with intra-building
wireless LAN connectivity," says Charles H. Olmstead, president of
IntraLAN Wireless Communications Division of LCI. "The sophistication of
its design provides peerless LAN support, and its ease of installation and
cost-effective maintenance provides considerable time and budget
advantages."

InfraLAN Wireless Ethernet System prices average $250 per node, depending
on configuration.

Laser Communications, Inc. (LCI) is a leading developer and manufacturer of
short-haul communications solutions utilizing advanced wireless
technology. Its systems are installed in government agencies,
corporations, universities, hospitals and financial institutions in North
and South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa.
