Knowledge Finder for Microsoft Windows Now Available

North Andover, Massachusetts -- May 4, 1994. Aries Systems Corporation of
North Andover, Massachusetts, today announced the immediate availability
of its Knowledge Finder and Knowledge Server medical CD-ROM search
software for use with Microsoft Windows.

Knowledge Finder is a fuzzy logic text search system used to access
bibliographic and full-text medical reference databases published and
distributed on CD-ROM discs. Originally developed in 1987 for the Apple
Macintosh, Knowledge Finder was the first CD-ROM text search system in
medicine to use probabilistic/term-frequency analysis, English-style
queries (word, phrase or sentence), and relevance-ranked search results.
The primary goal of this design was to enhance, facilitate and simplify
end-user access to databases such as MEDLINE from the National Library of
Medicine. In 1990, the search software was ported in a proprietary graphic
interface environment to the MS-DOS environment.

With the rapid acceptance in the marketplace of Microsoft Windows, Aries
Systems committed to and has now delivered a new generation of the
Knowledge Finder that fully supports both the Windows and Macintosh
desktop environments. Developed using sophisticated cross-platform
software development tools, Knowledge Finder presents an almost identical
appearance and behavior on the different platforms (see photo), while
simultaneously adhering to the interface conventions of each specific
platform. This means that users experience a seamless integration of the
searching functions with their other personal computer tools. The
cross-platform architecture also means that identical CD-ROM discs and
databases can be used for all target platform environments. Physicians can
now use their CD-ROM on a Windows machine in the office, and the same disc
on a Macintosh at home.

"Use of mature, cross-platform software development tools offers Aries and
our customers many benefits," noted Lyndon Holmes, president of Aries
Systems. "We provide a broad range of customers with a premier literature
searching tool, regardless of their choice of desktop computing
technology. Since we develop and enhance the Knowledge Finder software
once for all platforms, we make better use of our research and development
funding - this means we'll be able to deliver more and better products to
our customers. Because the physical CD-ROM discs play on any of the
supported platforms, we're more efficient in the manufacturing and
production side of our business. And perhaps most importantly, our
customers can choose to a use a particular platform, and can have a high
level of confidence that Aries will continue to support and deliver new
products for their environment of choice."

Version 3.0 of the Knowledge Finder software has been comprehensively
evaluated by hundreds of beta testers, with overwhelmingly positive
results and comments. Typical reactions include "Great job!"; "A real
pleasure to use"; "Very user-friendly"; "Major advance"; and "A great
development". By simultaneous testing of the software in Windows and
Macintosh environments, subtle "hidden" problems were identified and
resolved during the testing period. Rigorous, quantitative performance
testing assured that searching speeds were maintained at the same high
levels as established in earlier releases of Knowledge Finder.

Aries Systems publishes many CD-ROM medical reference databases, including
the MEDLINE, HEALTH and AIDSLINE databases from the National Library of
Medicine, and CANCERLIT from the National Cancer Institute. Using its
powerful data compression technology, Aries Systems is able to offer the
entire MEDLINE database, from 1966 through the present, on 7 CD-ROM discs.
The Specialty Series MEDLINE databases provide multiple year, single disc
databases from MEDLINE for cardiology, neurology, obstetrics/gynecology,
ophthalmology, orthopaedics, pathology, pediatrics, radiology,
surgery/anesthesia, and sleep disorders. Knowledge Finder databases can
also be accessed across local area networks, using the companion Knowledge
Server search software (also now available in Windows and Macintosh
formats).
