NORTHWEST SOFTWARE PUBLISHER RELEASES MULTIMEDIA BILINGUAL SCIENCE PROGRAM

Kirkland, WA, March 30, 1994 -- One of the nation's fastest growing
publishers of bilingual interactive educational software, Integrated
Learning Systems, announced today the availability of a program that
teaches science and English at the same time. Progressive Science
Instruction -- Life Science, was developed by experts in multimedia
technology, bilingual communications, ESL, and curriculum development.

While multimedia applications for the classroom are quickly gaining clout
in the educational technology arena, Integrated Learning Systems has
jumped ahead of other developers with its production of curriculum
materials designed especially for the influx of non-English speaking
students into an educational system grounded in the English language.

The need for computer-based instruction systems for this population is
obvious to those aware of the statistics: in the Los Angeles Unified
School District, with only 3,600 certified bilingual teachers available,
there are 279,729 students requiring bilingual instruction. Two out of
three students come from a family where a native language other than
English is spoken. An impressive sixty percent of the students in the
district are of Hispanic origin. Los Angeles is not particularly the
exception: minority group members in the U.S. are estimated to reach 84
million in the next 20 years.

Educational leaders coming out early in support of interactive multimedia
instruction are referring to the technology as "smart" training programs,
and some predict that they significantly reduce education and training
costs for both education and industry. Multimedia instruction decreases
time needed by students to master associated concepts, plus increases long
term retention.

Why science instruction to teach English as a Second Language? Research has
indicated strongly that science, with its hands-on, problem-solving
activities, is an excellent vehicle for improving English language
instruction. To date, this feature has been completely lacking in programs
designed to provide a transition for ESL students into the American
education system.

Progressive Science Instruction for the multicultural classroom offers
context-based language learning as its foundation. Students at the
junior/senior high school levels are intrinsically motivated to learn
about life sciences since they can relate the concepts immediately to
their own lives. The life sciences are also an important part of their
school curriculum. Therefore, students who use Progressive Science
Instruction will have many opportunities to apply their developing
language skills in a meaningful context.

School district officials and teachers who recognize the need for these
essential new technologies may contact Integrated Learning Systems
