PROXIM SHIPS HIGH-SPEED WIRELESS NETWORK ACCESS POINT

RangeLAN2/Access Point Provides Wireless Industry's First 2.4 GHz Frequency
Hopping Transparent Bridge For Ethernet LANs

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 9, 1994 -- Proxim, Inc. announced today that it
is shipping RangeLAN2/Access Point, the wireless industry's first 2.4 GHz
frequency hopping transparent bridge product for protocol-independent
wireless access to existing wired Ethernet LANs. RangeLAN2/Access Point
provides a pre-configured, plug-and-play extension of existing wired
networks to RangeLAN2 wireless LAN users.

RangeLAN2/Access Point offers a number of important wireless connectivity
features such as seamless roaming for mobile computer users and wireless
repeating capability to expand the coverage area of RangeLAN2 wireless
networks. Proxim's unique RangeLAN2/Roaming architecture allows mobile
computer users the ability to roam anywhere within range of their network,
regardless of protocol or network operating system. The RangeLAN2/Access
Point's wireless repeating capability extends the reach of RangeLAN2
wireless networks to remote locations within a facility.

RangeLAN2/Access Point operates at the Data Link level (layer 2) of the OSI
network model and supports existing wired network standards including
802.3 Ethernet packet filtering and forwarding, 802.1(D) spanning tree and
SNMP network management. As a Media Access Control (MAC) layer transparent
bridge, RangeLAN2/Access Point provides protocol- and NOS-independent
wireless connectivity into any computing environment including Novell
Netware, Banyan Vines, Microsoft Windows for Workgroups, Artisoft
LANTASTIC, IBM LAN Server, DEC Pathworks and TCP/IP.

"RangeLAN2/Access Point is an ideal product for network managers in
corporate, government and education environments because it offers a
plug-and-play extension of existing Ethernet networks to both mobile and
desktop wireless users," said Mack Sullivan, Proxim's director of
marketing. "RangeLAN2/Access Point also expands Proxim's opportunities
within application-specific vertical markets, such as health care and
manufacturing, where protocol-independent network access to non-LAN
computing environments is required."

All RangeLAN2 products are based on frequency hopping spread spectrum
technology in the 2.4-2.483 GHz band. RangeLAN2 delivers a raw
uncompressed data rate of 1.6 Mbps per channel with 15 independent
channels available. This multi-channel approach enables 15 independent
wireless LANs to operate within the same physical space, effectively
increasing the aggregate capacity of RangeLAN2 networks by fifteen-fold.
Depending on traffic and utilization patterns, network managers can add
users and subnets in a scalable fashion and load balance across networks.

Pricing and Availability

RangeLAN2/Access Point, available immediately, is list priced at $1,895.
Other members of the RangeLAN2 family include RangeLAN2/ISA, a wireless
LAN adapter that fits into the expansion slot of PC/AT and PC/XT desktop
PCs and network servers; and RangeLAN2/PCMCIA, a PCMCIA interface card
which enables portable computer users to access existing wired
client/server networks or to communicate on a peer to-peer basis with
other RangeLAN2 systems. RangeLAN2/ISA is currently available through
Proxim distributors, TechData and Merisel, and has a list price of $595.
