Software Developers Support Apple's new PowerPC Processor-based Workgroup
Servers with Optimized Applications

Momentum for PowerPC Processor Systems Grows as Developers Commit to
Powerful New Platform

CUPERTINO, California--April 25, 1994--Apple Computer, Inc. today announced
that industry-leading software developers continue to build momentum for
the new PowerPC microprocessor-based systems by optimizing applications
that will take full advantage of this powerful new architecture.

At the introduction of the new Workgroup Servers today (see separate
release), 10 major independent software vendors (ISVs) announced their
support for the new systems. Many of the applications and client/server
software have been optimized for the PowerPC architecture.

The new optimized applications have been written specifically to take
advantage of the PowerPC processor found in the new Workgroup Servers,
offering customers two- to four-times the performance of the same
applications running on today's fastest 68040-based systems, depending on
the application and client/server configuration. Additionally, many
developers announced that existing Motorola 68000-based applications are
compatible with the new Workgroup Servers.

Companies today announcing compatible or optimized software for PowerPC
processor-based systems include ACI US Inc., Aldus Corp., Canto Software
Inc., Dantz Development Corp., DayStar Digital Inc., EveryWare Development
Corp., ON Technology Corp., Technology Works Inc., Quark Inc. and Wave
Research Inc.

"The power that can be harnessed on PowerPC processor-based systems creates
a tremendous opportunity for software developers-- especially for server
software developers building applications where performance really counts
," said Jim Groff, vice president for LAN Systems for the Apple Business
Systems Division. "Our third-party partners understand the unbridled
potential of this new technology and, like Apple , are building for the
future-- today."

ACI US, Inc., for instance, intends to offer its entire 4th Dimension and
Object Master family of products for the Power PC processor platform.
While performance increases for 4D applications will depend on the type of
application, 4D code for calculation-intensive applications can be two- to
three- times faster on PowerPC processor-based Workgroup Servers than on
the fastest Motorola 68000-based systems. A version optimized for PowerPC
is expected this summer. (Contact: Suzanne Whitney-Smedt at (408)

The Prepress Division of Aldus Corp. plans to provide its leading prepress
software to run on PowerPC processor-based Workgroup Servers from Apple.
These applications, including Aldus Open Prepress Environment (OPEN)
workflow automation software, Aldus Color Central and Aldus TrapWise, have
been recompiled and optimized to take full advantage of the superior speed
of the PowerPC processor. Color Central will be available in the second
quarter of 1994; OPEN and TrapWise will be available in the third quarter
of 1994. (Contact: Barbara E. Burke at (206) 628-6594).

The new Workgroup Servers come with features designed to protect server
data, including Retrospect Remote 2.1, back-up software from Dantz
Development Corp. The award winning backup software is now available in a
version optimized for the PowerPC platform. Retrospect Remote comes
bundled on the Workgroup Server 8150 and Workgroup Server 9150. (Contact:

Other companies pledging support for the PowerPC platform:

- Butler, a database solution from EveryWare Development Corp., has been
optimized to take advantage of the PowerPC processor. It is expected to
ship this Summer 1994. Contact: Henry Lach at (905) 819-1173, ext. 233.

- Canto Software Inc. announced that Cumulus PowerPro, its fast and
powerful media database solution, has been optimized to take advantage of
the PowerPC processor platform. Cumulus PowerPro allows for virtually
unlimited numbers of image and media files to be managed across an entire
network. Cumulus PowerPro is expected to be available by the end of April
1994. Contact: Ralf Beuschlein at (415) 431-6871.

- DayStar Digital Inc. announced availability of PhotoMatic, software that
automates and batch processes images in Adobe Photoshop. The new
software, compatible with the new PowerPC processor-based Workgroup
Servers from Apple, allows users of Photoshop to remotely process images
with PowerPC processor performance as well as increase workflow and
efficiency by automating repetitive tasks done in Photoshop. Contact:
John Chan at (404) 967-2077, ext. 583.

- ON Technology Corporation announced that Meeting Maker XP, the leading
group scheduler for Windows, DOS, and Macintosh computers, will support
the new Workgroup Servers from Apple. The latest version of the group
scheduling product allows users of all platforms--DOS, Windows, Macintosh
and PowerPC processor-based systems from Apple--to plan, schedule and
confirm meetings using desktop computers. Meeting Maker XP for PowerPC
processor-based systems is expected to be available in the second quarter
1994. Contact: Karen Whitman at (617) 374-1400.

- Technology Works, Inc. (TechWorks) announced server support programs for
PowerPC processor-based systems from Apple, including a program to offer
GraceLAN Server Manager 3.0, a network management software, with the new
Workgroup Servers. All PowerPC processor-based Workgroup Server customers
who return their registration cards will receive a complimentary copy of
GraceLAN Server Manager 3.0 from Apple. GraceLAN is compatible with the
new servers and will be optimized to take full advantage of the PowerPC
platform by Fall 1994. Contact: Sandy Flora at (512)794-3601.

- Quark, Inc. announced it will support the new PowerPC processor- based
Workgroup Servers from Apple for use with the Quark Publishing System
(QPS). The new servers can be configured to run as either a QuarkDispatch
server or a QPS file server. The Quark Publishing System integrates
QuarkXPress with editorial management, document tracking and text
processing applications used in a networked publishing environment.
Contact: Peter Warren at (303) 894-8888.

- Wave Research, Inc. announced FileWave 2.0, an automated software
distribution and management system that makes it as easy to manage a
workgroup or entire enterprise using Macintosh computers as it is to
manage a single Workgroup Server. FileWave is compatible with the new
PowerPC processor-based Workgroup Servers.Contact: Todd Logan at (510)

Building Momentum

Apple expects additional software developers will announce their support
for the platform in the near future as momentum for the new platform
grows. Many software companies are testing their products to ensure
compatibility with RISC-based systems from Apple, while others are
rewriting their programs to take full advantage of the performance offered
by the PowerPC processor.

Shipping dates for compatible or optimized software for PowerPC
processor-based systems from third-party companies vary. Contact the
individual ISV for specific product plans, availability and pricing.

The new Workgroup Servers and Power Macintosh computers are the
next-generation of Apple systems based on PowerPC, a new RISC- based
microprocessor family under development by Apple, IBM and Motorola. Apple
has stated its plans to offer a full line of PowerPC processor-based
systems from entry-level to high-end systems and many upgrade paths for
680x0-based system customers.
