Entrepreneur Launches Unique Computer Service

10 May, 1994 -- Memphis, TN -- A Memphis entrepreneur is making use of
inexpensive high-speed telephone modems to
carve a unique and profitable niche in the crowded field of Computer
Services.

Rob Cosgrove, President of Precision Data Corporation, has developed a
system that backs up his clients' computer data by telephone modem at
night while businesses are closed.

"This service wasn't commercially feasible just two years ago," says
Cosgrove. "Recently, however, modem prices have dropped so dramatically
that small businesses can now afford such a service at a price that can
make it profitable."

There's also 'that public awareness thing,' as Cosgrove puts it, "Many
people are just now becoming aware of the need to protect the data their
businesses depend on. It's really quite an easy service to sell.
Responsible business owners already know they need it."

Cosgrove has written a book describing how to start a Remote Backup Service
(RBS), and offers software to automate the business. Cosgrove estimates
that 200 independent entrepreneurs have started Remote Backup Services,
ninety percent of them since March 1994.

Remote Backup Services solve the three main problems small businesses face
when doing backups. Most small businesses simply don't do backups. Of
those that do backups, most don't do them properly. Hardly any safeguard
their backup tapes off-site.

"Making backup tapes is fine, if you do it correctly, but most people don't
do it right. Then they leave their tapes in a drawer next to the computer
to be destroyed right along with their equipment," Cosgrove explains.
"This defeats the whole purpose of doing backups in the first place. A
Remote Backup Service solves all these problems."

Cosgrove runs his Remote Backup Service out of his converted garage. "Most
people run Remote Backup Services from home. since it's a Remote Backup
Service, it really doesn't matter where you do it." he continues, "The
service (RBS) sort-of runs itself, anyway. It's just about the perfect
low-maintenance, easy startup computer service."

The RBS Book and TeleBack RBS Software can be ordered for $249 from
